I went ahead and voted for Rob Ford today

One thing that the citizens of Toronto can be assured of is that if Toronto hating Ford wins, he will wield virtually no power since all his ideas will be voted down by the progressive politicians that you detest RE81. If you hate Toronto just as much as Ford, why not get the hell out?

This attitude is killing us

In case you didn't notice, we are in a recession. Lots of people have lost their jobs, and some even their homes. This includes residents born and raised in Toronto. If you don't want to support social housing and services, I'd like to hear your ideas on how to deal with them.

If you don't want to support investments in the city center, I suggest you move to Detroit. They haven't invested in their city in decades, and it seems to be working out great for them. Also, by your theory, why should Toronto tax dollars from other parts of the city support YOUR subway line? The way I see it, the few hundred thousand (if that) people who live along Sheppard between Fairview and the Scarborough Town Center can spend their own tax dollars to build a multi-billion dollar subway extension.

I think you just proved to everyone here that anyone with a grade 6 education is smarter than you.

I guess you must have dropped out after Grade 5!

The subway would be an equalizer for all the years of government money filtered from the suburbs to the center.

My family and community is far from rich but we hold together with what we got. To use the Canadian recession, which was hardly a recession to begin with as an excuse is laughable. Anybody knows part of living within your means is to save a part of your income for a rainy day. If you're living paycheque to paycheque and not saving up anything that means you're not living within your means! I grew up in a single-parent home just above the poverty line and had a roof over my head every day of my life, recession or no recession with not one penny of government assistance other than the standard child tax benefit. If the recession claimed a few Bay St bigshots and comfortable CAW workers living their lives of luxury on credit....oh well. Needless to say how do I think we should deal with them? We'll let that sort itself out in 3 months time during first cold snap of the year. Or the feds can step up and take responsibility for the Canadians and refugees and the Province can step up and take responsibility for the drunken redneck Ontarians. Toronto taxpayers should not have to be held hostage of being the last line of defense.

If people are finding it hard to find a job in the city, perhaps the current mayor and his band of progressives have something to do with it. I can only imagine how much better this city would have been under Tory. Now its in too deep. We need a Rob Ford to burn it down and start fresh.

I'm surprised with whatever Bachelor's Degree you hold that makes you think you're so smart, whether it be Sociology, Poli Sci, English, History or whatever other joke that U of T calls a degree only because its high margin and can be used to fund the underfunded research labs, that you would ever compare Toronto to Detroit. Detroit was done years ago when the US auto industry died. No amount of investment or lack thereof would have made a difference.

For the record, there is A LOT of social housing in the inner suburbs.

http://www.insidetoronto.com/news/l...-61-seriously-injured-in-cemetery-sex-assault

The piece of garbage drug addict murderer responsible for this was living in a flop house just east of the cemetary. For the record, my mom and grandmother both live close to the area and report to me similar "types" of individuals frequenting the flop houses. We can thank Adrian Heaps for allowing this to keep his socialist pals happy and keeps these things away from their wards.

RE81's remarks are a tad strident but they differ from the opinions of many many suburbanites only by degree of dissatisfaction, many of his points resonate with my neighbours.
For example the waterfront. Toronto's waterfront was an industrial wasteland from day one (and largerly still is) for the simple reason that it was disposable-no one wanted to be there 12 months a year. This is temperate zone Toronto, not Miami Beach, the waterfront is not a pleasant environment for at least half the year. Railing on about the Gardiner being an obstacle to accessing the waterfront is just too stupid, who cares as long as the railway tracks remain in place and they are not going anywhere.

I love the city and is fixing what is broken. If we had Tory it might not have had to come this far but right now we need Ford to burn it to the ground in order to build it back up. Right now we are the country's garbage dump for its most worthless homegrown individuals and its refugees so Canada can look good on the world stage but in reality does nothing with them once they dump them off in Scarborough.

I'll tackle this if no one else does, I just don't feel like getting wrapped up in an internet shit storm.

If you'll excuse me, the microwave just beeped. Popcorn's ready.

(And I thought with my Saturday night plans canceled, this was going to be a boring evening. God bless the internet :D )

Unfortunately for you, mine weren't so this will be my last post for tonight until tomorrow :)

Do want to respond to this one:

My ex-girlfriend was a drug addict from Newfoundland, came to Toronto because we have the resources to help people like her get clean. She did, and is now attending George Brown College.

This is the Cinderella version of the story, but it gets the point across that we have the resources to help people. Yes unfortunately there are those who never get the help they need, but we do help a lot of people get back on their feet. Maybe rather than destroying all our social programs, we should be investing in more of them across the country so that they don't all come to Toronto?

Electrify, go for it! My gf's parents are in town tonight and I too have to stay in... this guy is providing entertainment you can't buy!

I'll play devil's advocate and suggest that Rob Ford may be good for Toronto. I don't think he'll be very effective but may help set the tone for less frivilous spending. I'm not worried about losing streetcars or any real damage. So people vent their frustrations. Royson James can gleefully attack the next person in charge, whoever it is. Practically speaking, though, I could never endorse a candidate who treats cyclists as 2nd class citizens.

No RE81 should not be banned, I'm tired of that shit, people are allowed to have different opinions. While I disagree with him, he represents the suburbs and if it s not him it will be the "men" on thestar.com so we need to listen and make this city work for everyone. Or deamalgamate. Your choice guys.

Oh fine, just for you Calrissian :)

The subway would be an equalizer for all the years of government money filtered from the suburbs to the center.

I don't have the data of where each and every tax dollar is spent, but I do know that higher density areas create more tax revenue, and generally support lower density areas. So if anything, downtown tax revenue is finding its way up to the suburbs. Likewise, your tax dollars are probably being used to support the outer suburbs and rural communities.

I used the recession as an example, but there are several other causes for people to rely on social assistance. And if you think the only people who lost their jobs were those who worked for the auto industry and Bay St, well I can't argue on that level of ignorance. Same goes for your solution of letting people out of work freeze to death. If only it were that simple, odds are they would resort to crime and steal and hurt from those who do have roofs over their heads before they let that happen.

If people are finding it hard to find a job in the city, perhaps the current mayor and his band of progressives have something to do with it. I can only imagine how much better this city would have been under Tory. Now its in too deep. We need a Rob Ford to burn it down and start fresh.

If you are referring to the business tax rate, then yes it is too high and needs to be dropped. And for all the stupid things Miller has done, he has at least lowered the business tax rate substantially over his terms. Unfortunately, if anything he hasn't done it enough. Personally, I'd rather see the new mayor cut the fees introduced under Miller, and aggressively set the municipal tax rates where they need to be.

Also, assuming Ford burns down the city like you so desire, what makes you think that Toronto would rise from the ashes better than ever before? Even IF that did happen, odds are it would take decades - maybe even centuries for it to happen. Toronto ain't in the best shape, but it is hardly 'beyond saving.' Detroit on the other hand...

Funny enough, most of my formal political education dates back to a civics class high school. Beyond that, it has been an odd college course, reading newspapers and internet flame wars, and The Comedy Network and CBC (Air Farce, Daily Show, Colbert Report). Even as not a political scholar, I can see that Rob Ford is spitting out "easy answers to easy problems." This may scare you, but the problems that Toronto faces are highly complex, and easy answers like "stopping the gravy train" are not going to cut it.

Toronto is a great city. And look how much better it has become under Miller!

No one would suggest burning this city to the ground.

Smitherman might not be the best mayor ever, but he'll be far better than Ford.

He certainly won't embarrass the same way as Ford would, with his homophobic bigotry.

I'm really surprised that a newbie would jump in here with post after post. Like many others recently, RE81 is likely not a newbie, but is probably yet another banned member looking for a fresh start with an alias. That is why I suggest be be banned. Not for his opinions, but because everything points to him/her being a troll.

Though he may be trolling, he hasn't crossed into ban territory yet.

Then again, maybe he's not trolling. These days, separating a troll from a dedicated conservative can be very difficult...
