HMCS Haida

I've been a couple of times. I think it benefits from being so close to HMCS Star. The renovation on the stern should be completed by now.

It's worth visiting; it's a piece of Canada's history, and an impressive piece of equipment.

It was sadly neglected while in Toronto. Sheila Copps, as Heritage Minister, finally championed getting it fixed up, but on condition that it be moved to her home area of Hamilton.

In the mid-1990s I worked at Ontario Place and frequently toured the old ship. The poor state of the ship always dissappointed me, and I closely followed the restoration at the Welland Dockyard on the Haida website.

How, if we can just rescue the other historic conveyances at Ontario/CNE, such as the Ed Hanlan tugboat and the steam train.

It seems to me that Hamilton offers a more congenial "Maritime Museum" environment for the Haida to exist in. (It always seemed "plopped" in Toronto, even when the Marine Museum was within eyeshot. And we all know what happened to the Marine Museum.)

Let's just hope it don't catch fire like the Cutty Sark...

i went there for fathers day a couple of weeks ago. though it would be a treat for my dad since he loves ships and this would be the first time being on a naval ship.

here are some pictures of my visit. enjoy!

Nitpick: You *never* place "the" before the name of the ship when using the full name, i.e. you never say the HMCS Haida. You can say "the Haida", but never "the HMCS Haida".

Thanks for posting those pics.

My grandpa was in the Navy in the late 50s/early 60s (I believe it was 59-63, but I'm not entirely sure, I'll have to ask him again) and of the two ships he was on during his service, one was the Haida (the other being the Nutka (sp?). One day I should bug him to take a drive to Hamilton, because I don't think he's seen the ship since he was on it.

I visited Haida today for the first time since she left Ontario Place. I have to say that while the hull appears to be in much better shape, the rest of the ship seems woefully neglected of maintenance and upkeep. All exposed decks were covered in rust and cracked paint, same for the exterior fittings such as smaller gun mounts, Limbo mortar, bridge, etc. This ship desperately needs a crew of scrapers and painters. Interior spaces, including petty officer and officer cabins are worn out, while access to the boiler room has been deleted entirely from the tour (engine room remains).

Was the planned 2016 upgrade and maintenance not undertaken? http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamil...n-harbour-on-way-to-drydock-repairs-1.3765195
