Harbourfront Centre

I read last night on IG that the Fleck Dance Theatre is closing down in March 2025 because it isn’t being used enough.

Some good news!

Power Plant gallery is splitting from Harbourfront Centre.

The move will separate the Power Plant from the financial troubles of Harbourfront, which has been trying to reduce costs – while at the same time forcing the gallery to reckon with a different kind of financial precarity to make up for its lost Harbourfront Centre funding.

Harbourfront Centre will continue to offer Power Plant free rent, maintenance and security, Power Plant executive director Carolyn Vesely said in an interview Monday. But in the organizations’ new fiscal year, which starts Tuesday, Power Plant will no longer receive annual cash contributions from Harbourfront that have averaged about $120,000 and were $380,000 last year.

I have fond memories of walking through the building with my parents in the 80's that hosted the artist studios - you would walk on a mezzanine and be able to look down into the workshops as the artists toiled away. My favourite was the glass blowing. Is all that still there? I haven't been in many years...

Yes, the glass blowing was fun to watch - long closed, I think well before covid.

The Shaw Festival is putting on plays at one of the theatres here!

Lets elaborate a bit:

The Shaw is taking up a 3 year artist-in-residence role at Harbourfront Centre while the Royal George undergoes reconstruction in Niagara-On-The-Lake.

It will likely mount about 1/3 of its annual productions here, with the remainder in Niagara the Shaw's other venues.

This, combined with the previous Ontario Science Centre announcement, will hopefully help Harbourfront find their financial footing.
