It's such a shame they will have to close off the roof instead of using materials that let in light (ETFE on the existing frame would be neat).

Platform 3 is being used for VIA Rail, but can hold a GO train as well UPX train at the same time at its station since they are on the same track.

Is it me or has all the roofing that was being installed over the platform been removed?

When I was on the platform on Sat, I noticed all the roofing material has been removed from most of the platform that where under construction when I last visited the platforms in daylight.

Haven't been following this thread for some time as well the site. If the material has been removed, wonder what the issue is to have it happen?

The nerd in me was excited when I saw a truck carrying a couple of pre-fab concrete exhaust vents destined for Union station, 2 mornings in a row, very close to my house. It was going southbound on Dufferin around Rutherford.

just drive up the 400 mid-day, you see all kinds of interesting pre-fab materials flying down the highway. There is a concrete plant outside of Barrie that they all get made at. I've seen pieces of bridges for MTO, tunnel liners for the Eglinton Crosstown, etc. as well as the more typical stuff like sewer pipes.

I noticed before going to Metrolinx meeting, the roof skylight have been clear of all material since I last saw it. I hope they plan on washing it before the games, as you can see the marking where the material used to be.

I noticed they have started to reinstall the roof over platform 7-8 at the east end

A washing is a good idea. I hope they have internal illumination available for the Union roof box.

On the ground, for the ironworks, I also noticed that those concrete "boxes" in the middle of the steel arches, are now all gone too. Those were quite ugly. I think this is the best they can do before PanAm regarding the old shed.

It had been quite a while since I was last in the shed, so the time to catch up was earlier this evening:

It might be a modern retrofit of an old structure. I've seen other structures they 'kept' through the Union shed renovations. Is it one of them?

It might also be servicing for the planned green gardens above. Workers can go higher up, to walk on top of the green roof.

If those aren't it, I would speculate it might be a way to lift the elevator out of the way for servicing underneath, e.g. if there's a good reason that servicing is easier this way.

mdrejhon: can you fill me in on what'll be happening with all the steel columns? I mean, the new top looks good, but in conjunction with the steel columns things like unfinished, if not ad hoc. And as for where the train shed extends beyond the new top, what'll be happening with those steel columns? As there, without any top at all, things look pretty rough...

What's with this massive elevator column? Looks way too tall.

It is indeed for servicing the roof--in that elevator (platforms 10-11, york concourse) there is an extra button above Train Level labelled 'Roof' that requires a key to enable. None of the other elevators, that I have seen, have that button or are built that tall, it seems to be just this one.
