GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

The work done at West Highland Creek was replacing a storm drain and building a retaining wall around the signal mast.

I made a trip on the Barrie line today, and I have to say I was impressed at just how much civil work has fallen into place towards eventual double tracking. With very few gaps, there is now a subgrade fully laid from Davenport all the way to Maple. North of Maple, the work isn't quite as far along, but a lot of earthmoving has been done. Sound walls and security fencing is also pretty much complete with very few gaps. There was evidence of some prep for adding the second track at key grade crossings.

There are a few specific prerequisite tasks remaining that I would predict ML will finish before Onxpress tackles track construction, as they would be even more difficult to complete with added trains running

- The grading south of Bloor is incomplete, and telco/utility work is evident at Queen and at Dundas/College
- Lansdowne GO station
- Removal of the Hydro pylons south of Eglinton
- Caledonia GO station
- Downsview Park second platform and Sheppard Ave bridge
- Maple GO station
- Aurora second platform

Having said that, one would hope that ML would attack these things in earnest in order to get this line to a full 2WAD state. It could be the model line for other routes.... whereas if ML rested on its oars now, it would be a waste of all the money invested to date. If ML is looking to redeem its reputation by making a significant step forward, this might be the opportunity.

Metrolinx has posted a whole bunch of quarterly reports from its upcoming board meeting on Nov. 27 on its documents page. There is way too much to summarize, but here are a few noteworthy things.

  • The Finch West LRT will start revenue service on Dec. 7.
  • The Scarborough Subway tunnel boring machine has tunnelled 3 km and is undergoing another planned maintenance stop south of Brimorton Dr.
  • ECTS is being tested on the Richmond Hill Line.
  • The Etobicoke Creek Bridge replacement on the Lakeshore West Line is expected to be done by the end of December.
  • On the Kitchener Line, work with CN has progressed to detailed design on corridor upgrades.
There is a lot more in those documents. I have downloaded copies of the reports in case any of the 12 board meeting documents get pulled.

Interestingly, most of the links there are dead ends for me.......various, nothing there, page not working messages.

The Nov 27th meeting is not listed on the 'upcoming meetings' page.......

I have copies of all the documents as PDFs. I'm having a bit of trouble uploading them to UT. There should be 11 documents attached to this post. @nfitz has posted a copy of a 12th document in the Finch West thread.

So this is probably a stupid question but have their been any announced plans for Metrolinx to upgrade the Lakeshore East line stations in Durham? I assumed there would be since so many other stations have been modernized, including along the Lakeshore line (Eglinton, Guildwood, plus a bunch out West), but I couldn't find anything about it. I feel like I'm missing something cus it seems weird if there are no planned upgrades for Pickering/Ajax/Whitby/Oshawa beyond building parking garages.

not that i've heard of. They already have substantial canopys and are accesible which was the biggest part of the eglinton and guildwood upgrades
