GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

There are a limited number of companies and crews that are available (and legally able) to work in the railroad environment.

In many, many cases, work has to be booked months to years in advance because of that.

In this case, there is something so show-stopping as to prevent the project from being completed as a whole, and thus require a complete rethink of what needs to be done. And because of that, it was felt to reallocate those scarce resources to other tasks. You know, rather than having everyone sit on their thumbs doing nothing - which seems to be another thing that you to love to complain about.

Dan
just proves how poor and fragile our rail infrastructure capabilities are as well as ML's poor project management.

and we boast about being a "world class city".........

It will be weird to open the GO station without the Broadview extension but there will be a small station building on Eastern Ave (south-side) with direct access stairs & elevators to both GO platforms.

I imagine they are required by the fire code to have a second point of egress, even if its an emergency exit only. That should be interesting.

***

No transit service on Eastern Avenue currently.

No transit service on Broadview south of Queen.

No reason to end up at East Harbour, no one really there to start their trip either.

I have to imagine they'll keep it closed for awhile.

From Hatch’s perspective, I think they’re reporting on their delivery milestones. Had a similar contract been executed for Mt. Dennis GO station the contractor would likely have estimated the station was “ready” earlier than the Q4 2025 opening.

As for the later 2029 date of the Broadview extension, I imagine this is coordinated separately with the city for utility tie-ins, traffic signal activation, etc.

Bingoooooo (though it is a bit more complicated when it comes to construction law within the railway ROW as @smallspy correctly notes).
Well, except....

You don't just drop new control points in willy-nilly like that They have to be integrated in with the rest of the existing system, and that requires someone with a pretty big brain to design and test all the circuits before they even get installed - and then tested again - out in the field. And then making the necessary modifications at head office for the RTCs to be able to operate them. And for a temporary installation? I just can't see it happening.

Honestly, "stretching" the existing Underwood control point to north of the bridge and installing a new (set) of crossovers there would be a lot easier from a design, wiring, logic and operational standpoint, although it would require moving the signal masts and splicing dozens and dozens of wires several hundred feet to new terminations north of where they are today. Oh, and pulling up 500 feet worth of concrete ties in order to put the switches in. And potentially undoing a similar amount of ballast mats.

Not that it's an easy process either. But it strikes me as easier.

Does anyone know what the plan is for the Resources Road Logistics Hub? It looks like they've flattened and leveled a big area up on top of the hill and a smaller area at track level. Are they going to be building rail sidings there?

Great shots. The logistics hub and Woodbine GO are both being delivered by OnXpress and are some of their first GO Expansion projects. Will be interesting to see how they do as a builder.

St Clair - Old Weston GO station won’t have any GO platforms, only UPX??? Is this a sign of all day two way Kitchener service being axed?

The Broadview Extension is much longer than just the part that gets to the station.

The first step will go at least to Lakeshore, as set out in the Environmental Assessment.

But streetcars can't run on the new Broadview to the station until they have a place to turn around. The initial loop will probably be around Commissioners, with the redevelopment of the McCleary District. Future ideas exist to send it over the shipping channel on a new bridge, to terminate at the Hearn, but presumably that won't happen until the Hearn is redeveloped.

The skid steer and excavator have been removed from the West Highland Creek bridge staging area/parking lot south of Agincourt GO station.

Five sandbags have been placed in the creek while another 20+ remain up top in the staging area.

No further work has been completed since we saw the heavy equipment and sandbags arrive a few weeks ago.

looks like a bit of rain or the temp dropping to seasonal caught them off guard lol

Another video with smiling proud people who have zero concept of why this is going to be an epic failure. There is nothing but a bmw dealer there and literally no plan to bring a continuous mode of travel there Broadview extension (which would be the easiest solution) should be built prior to the EH station but they haven’t even factored for a viable road to go under the elevated tracks yet lol…. Only in Canada can this ridiculousness keep happening. It will still be barren in 2040 by wrongly putting in the Broadview extension after.

This is not correct. The Broadview extension to Lakeshore, under the tracks, is funded and will proceed in the next year or so.

Now, it will not have operating LRT/streetcar service right away, but the ROW will be constructed) whether that follows swiftly....... stay tuned.
