GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

GO 2.O, in theory is even more ambitious..........but ....a very long way from achieving its not yet publicly stated objectives. I believe it was @Willybru21 that first gave clear hints of what is now envisioned, some time back. While some of the details have changed since......his posts are probably the closest thing in the public domain.
Can someone provide some references back to those posts which hint at what GO 2.0 or whatever the next phase may be will entail? Just curious, thanks.

This is all we know

Right. I thought from the previous reply that @Willybru21 had posted something previously that added additional insight on top of the letter from Premier Ford. My apologies.

No apologies required. You're not wrong.

The public turn of phrase GO 2.O is new........but the concept of exceeding previously committed to service levels is not.

Look here:

Now the 2.0 idea has some stuff in it that is not represented above........ most, but not all of which has been discussed on UT....

Many UT threads dedicated to potential GO 2.0 ideas!

I think the most exciting things haven’t been talked about yet, which is awesome

Current track ownership of GO Transit routes because I was curious:

The Missing Link was envisioned to enable GO to acquire the rest of the tracks along the Kitchener and Milton lines.
Shouldn’t there be a little bit of CP representing Hamilton Junction-Hamilton Centre on the Lakeshore West Line?

Ah right. I just surveyed from the terminus to Union on each line, I forgot about the branch to Hamilton Centre.

One of the main reasons a GO Train will never have a route crossing a national (or even provincial border) is that it would then become a federally regulated railway. That opens up a litany of bureaucratic issues. If Ontario ever wanted to run a service to Buffalo, it would be easier to incorporate a new Crown Corp to do it.
Not only federal Canadian regs but in the case of Buffalo rail also US FRA. If VIA doesn’t do cross border I don’t see GO doing it

1) Complete Ontario Line trackshift and restore 3rd track on LSE
2) Complete design and procurement for Birchmount overpass - LSE
3) Complete West Highland Creek bridge - Lincolnville line
4) Complete Randolph entrance to Bloor GO - Kitchener line
5) Install Separate track for Barrie line Strachan - Parkdale
6) Fourth track Strachan - Humberview - Kitchener line
7) Complete design and procurement - CN Halton Sub expansion
8) Complete design, procurement, and installation Guelph second track and Hanlon junction - Kitchener line
9) Complete Acton siding - Kitchener line
10) Establish project team - Milton 2WAD
11) Procurement - Woodbine station
12) Complete tie-in - West Harbour turnouts
13) Acquire and complete Niagara Falls siding/layover track and CTC - Niagara Falls spur
14) Extend second track Concord - Maple - Teston - Barrie line
15) Complete Maple station
16) Complete second track Aurora station
17) Complete sound fencing and grading for second track Snider South - Parkdale - Barrie line
18) Complete Sheppard bridge for second track - Barrie line

Am I asking too much?

PS
19) Complete design 4th track platform - Danforth - LSE
20) Complete Centennial station and extension - LSW
21) Complete procurement - Caledonia station - Barrie line
22) Negotiate project agreement to restore second track - CN Grimsby Sub
Am I being naive in thinking that #1 restoring 3rd track to LSE Corridor can happen on the April 2025 weekend closures of the LSE/Stouffville lines? The bridge construction in the corridor seems to be moving along at a steady pace since the summer.

The public turn of phrase GO 2.O is new........but the concept of exceeding previously committed to service levels is not.

To nitpick this one.....some caution about "previously committed" service - There is no question that those service levels are a design vision, and it's good that the system is being built with that capacity roughed in.... but I wonder how many years will go by before it is needed. Even getting to 15 minute off peak is going to take a decade, and it is an interesting exercise to predict how demand will change at higher frequency vs the 15 min standard.

Intellectually, GO would likely sell and perform much differently with 6 car trains at 7.5 min frequency, as opposed to 12-car trains at 15 min headway. But that implies a much higher investment (twice as many locos with the present fleet) and double the labour cost.

It is definitely a good thing to look to a second tranche of investment in GO.... especially to create a regional network. So it's good to see this study. I just wonder how much traction it will add.

Now the 2.0 idea has some stuff in it that is not represented above........ most, but not all of which has been discussed on UT....

The focus on the bypass is something we have beaten to death, the anticipation of Milton is part of that, and Kitchener is mentioned explicitly. Beyond that, the intent is vague, or perhaps left for individual announcements or commentary during politicing speeches etc. Is there anything specific that I'm not seeing?

Yes..... but that's not really available to see yet.

Given my understanding of government resource allocations over the next few years, anything new while not pipe dream is also not imminent..........

Except for one long discussed project (that would only be construction, not operation).............but.....lets see who returns to QP in March..........one thing at a time.

I am hopeful that the two tracks will shift very soon - as you note, construction is moving very quickly. I suspect the third track will take a little longer to return, but certainly doable by, say, Labour Day.

This aligns with my suspicion that the 2.0 study, while useful, is camouflage for a pause, and not a next leap.

Getting GO 1.0 in place is going to challenge the cash flow for another 5-10 years. Hopefully whatever government is chosen, they will keep their eye on today's ball and not lose momentum.
