GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Lots of progress on the new west-bound GO tracks and platform at Exhibition Station. According to a worker on site, the station (or maybe just west bound service) will close next Friday and reopen with the new platform and tracks the following Monday.

Is Metrolinx slowly replacing wooden ties with concrete ties? Does it allow the trains to travel faster?
Yes.

Concrete ties are cheaper and easier to obtain than timber[dubiousdiscuss] and better able to carry higher axle-weights and sustain higher speeds. Their greater weight ensures improved retention of track geometry, especially when installed with continuous-welded rail. Concrete ties have a longer service life and require less maintenance than timber due to their greater weight, which helps them remain in the correct position longer.


Advantages include: They do not rot like timber sleepers, are fire proof, their extra weight makes track more stable (particularly with changes in temperature), they can withstand fire hazards better than wooden sleepers, they give more retentivity to the track, they have a longer life than wooden sleepers, and they need less maintenance, resulting in lower ongoing costs and fewer track closures. Additionally, concrete sleepers are not soaked in creosote like most wooden sleepers (used mainly in Europe), therefore they are environmentally friendlier.

As usual, all the important discussion will happen in camera. The public reports contain plenty of glossy pictures depicting all the neat work going on (this is not sarcasm, there is indeed a plethora of transit infrastructure construction happening around the GTA) - but absolutely no mention of timetables, completion progress, cost performance, or assurance of progress to the overall goal (ML is notorious for doing work incrementally but leaving bits undone that delay the end completion date)

My Project Management 101 textbooks and mentors drilled into me the concept that accountability consists of - "say what you are going to do, then do it, then show that you did it". And that demonstration of accountability must include all of: what is to be done (scope), by when (timetable), and with what resources (cost).

By that measure, Metrolinx is an abject failure as a public-facing organization. I question what role their Board serves when they are unwilling to face the public with this information. A mature public will understand that there are variables and timetables and cost projections are sometimes not achievable. But the public discussion is absolutely critical to creating a management culture where problems and obstacles are identified, tabled, analysed, and course-corrected effectively.

An organization that works in secret inevitably develops an ineffective management culture. Voila.

Can someone tell me how the accessibility, strollers and cycles are to use this new walkway system???

This ‘is‘ interesting. I stare at all of those surface parking lots, especially those on the west side, overlooking the valley, and think about what if? Certainly the area that was an agricultural hub of transport at one time, not to mention the basket factory etc, could be far more usefully employed then as a surface parking lot. (And we know of all the proposed change on the books and in the master plan by the town). But I could not find any reference to this project on the GO website. Just me?

The 2nd track on the east side of the existing Barrie Line south of Eglinton is fully graded and waiting for track to be place on it. Nothing on the northside until the new station is built

Mount Dennis stations still has a lot of flashing work to be done on all the platforms. Section of the west platform still missing railing as well landscaping. Can't see what needs to be done on the UPX platforms as no clear view of it at this time.

Within some reason, yes, they are replacing the wood ties with concrete ties.

No, they don't allow trains to travel faster.

The advantages of concrete ties is that they are heavier, and thus require fewer of them per mile and that they generally require less ongoing maintenance. They also usually have a longer lifespan than wood.

The disadvantages of concrete ties is that they are so heavy that they require machinery to do any work on the track, they have different (and inferior) vibration characteristics to wood, and any damage - for instance, a derailment - will require the wholesale changeout of all of the affected ties with new ones.

Further to my post regarding the new platform opening at Exhibition Station via GO's website.

Exciting news! The new north platform (platform 1) will be available for you to use on Monday, December 4. This will mean some changes to how you board the train. Here is what you need to know:

  • Access at the station will remain through Atlantic Avenue and the existing pedestrian tunnel. The following pedestrian changes will occur:
    • The access path from Atlantic Avenue will also provide access to the new platform 1.
    • The accessible ramp for boarding will move further east on the platform. (See map)
  • When travelling from the south side of the station, please follow directional signage to access the new platform.
  • There will be no changes to how you access the south side of the Station, elevators or TTC.
You will also have the following benefits available on Monday, December 4:

  • Newly built and heated platform shelters, and benches on the platform.
  • An improved announcement system.
  • Improved lighting at the station.
We are still progressing through finishing works at this station. This will mean the following items will be available shortly after Monday, December 4:

  • Digital departure screens. Please use GOtracker.ca, listen to live announcements or review digital screens on the south platform before proceeding to the north platform.
  • Additional fare payment devices on the platform. If arriving from Atlantic Avenue, please use the devices within the tunnel entrance prior to continuing onto platform 1.
  • For those travelling from the south side of the station to the north, all payment devices remain in place for you to use.
Through the GO Expansion program, we are building a better service with faster trains, more stations, increased capacity and reduced travel time.
