Globe: Slip-sliding away in Toronto (Wente)

The "Great guy, great hair, great city" slogan is from the 2003 campaign, isn't it?

The Globe could really use a war correspondent in Kandahar. Who knows, maybe they'd even throw in a free Humvee.

Free gas for embedded journalists in Iraq - gotta love the mpg of the M1A1 Abrams, and I am sure it got enough room for both Wente's ego and bulk.

The reasons nobody wants to locate in Toronto are simple: sky-high business taxes, and gridlock. Business tax rates are two to three times higher in Toronto than in 905. Businesses in Toronto pay a billion-dollar premium to be located here. Meantime, their employees can't get to work from the suburbs without a maddening commute.

She is bit over the top at times, however, another big time employer moving to the 905...

Honda purchased the Richmond Hill land with a plan to close its current Scarborough headquarters and various satellite offices around the Greater Toronto Area to bring operations under one roof.
About 600 employees are expected to move into the new facility once it opens and 400 more jobs are expected to be added within two years of moving in.

The important aspect of the employment decrease that Wente's rant obscures is that it's not a decrease from the downtown area, but from the old suburbs of Scarborough, Etobicoke, etc.

The Honda example is a case in point.

Higer taxes is a big reason for that decrease. Etobicoke doesn't offer any anvantages over Mississauga, but the taxes are higher. Why not relocate? It's a cause for concern for the whole region, and I would agree with her that it's one of the biggest issues facing the city.

However, downtown does offer advantages over Mississauga. It is not at risk if becoming a bedroom community for the 905.

Also, the commute downtown isn't that bad, and the reality is that commuting from a house in the burbs to a job in the burbs is e.g. (from Pickering to Mississauga or from Mississauga to Markham) is typically much worse.

"Meantime, my city is slip-sliding away, and nobody can seem to do a thing about it. It all makes me want to saddle up and ride right out of town.. "

Feel free to follow the yellow brick road my dear. And I though I was negative.
