Factory Theatre Renovation (3s, unit a architecture)

The addition has no relation to the old architecture. It could harmonize with it through a minimalism approach, but it does not take this approach, emphasizing horizontal lines.

You can kind of see what they were attempting but failed to do. The horizontal mullions 'reference' the stone banding in the brick; the corny red mondrian feature references the red awning and door; and together they downgrade and dominate the original building in a way that rivals the worst of the 1970's. Or maybe the ROM ;-)

The main thing invoking TTC is the colour red.
Change the red band to the same yellow that's on the Factory Theatre banners and sign and it would look more unified.

Wait, they're building the DRL already! So cool! I would not have expected the final route choice to have been under Adelaide though.

The Factory Theatre property is listed for sale as a redevelopment opportunity:

“We have engaged JLL to provide advice on how we can further develop our theatre in support of Canadian artists. Our objective is to see what opportunities exist to enhance our wonderful heritage building at Bathurst and Adelaide in partnership with private developers, having been unsuccessful in obtaining sufficient public funds to upgrade our 150-year-old building.

“At the present time we are seeking proposals that will enable us to enhance our current theatre and adjacent grounds. We are at the exploratory phase and have made no decision to move forward on any plans.

The three-storey, 18,000-square-foot mansion house was originally built in 1869 and has heritage status with the municipal and provincial governments. It houses two theatres, a rehearsal hall, a workshop, lounge space and a glazed vestibule and elevator that were added in 2013.

“Factory Theatre’s strong preference would be to retain a smaller component of an enhanced building in a future redevelopment,” said Medoff. “However, the organization is open to moving to a new home in the immediate area, where appropriate.”

Factory Theatre considers rebuild of its heritage venue — and it may include condos

Len Racioppo, chair of Factory’s board, said in a public statement Tuesday that the theatre has spent “considerable time with private developers” as it has reviewed future options. “We have come close to getting a deal done but could not close due to the lack of potential density and the added costs of preserving our heritage structures,” Racioppo added.

He acknowledged that selling the property, near Bathurst and King streets, “has never been the preferred option,” but suggested other alternatives were limited. Government assistance “has not been forthcoming,” he said, and a proposal that would have seen the theatre sell part of its property to the city to create a new park, with the proceeds used to rebuild the venue, ultimately fell through.

Racioppo’s statement comes after Factory’s co-founder and former artistic director publicly criticized the company for considering these plans without community consultation.
