Those are interesting photos because Yonge Street, from The Esplanade to King Street, was entirely paved with stone blocks in the early twentieth century, which are visible in those photos. Asphalt is being poured onto the "cobblestone" surface, presumably to accommodate modernity: the car.
 
A Garden Party at the Stanley Barracks in 1904 - the photo's a little fuzzy, but the affair appears to have been magnificent!
