Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

The environmental impact is pretty significant. Using a 10.7 tunnel would possibly cost less in tunneling expense per se and involve less concrete, but 50% more material would be displaced. For 12 meters, it could be about the same amount of concrete, but doubling the dirt.

Unless I have Tory'd the math, the excavation would create an 88-meter cube of fill to put somewhere.
I don't think disposing of fill is a major problem or environmental concern.
 
Depending on what we mean by "above ground", probably a hell of a lot cheaper to maintain, as well.

Massively cheaper if ground level. GO spends less for maintenance on their ~350km of track they own than TTC does on subway for maintenance.

Maintenance is a pretty consistent %age of replacement construction cost after a couple decades have passed (brand new stuff is normally very cheap to maintain).

53% of people who voted for Tory support the LRT. 27% preferred the subway.

40% of Scarborough residents approve of the subway extension. 50% do not.

28% of toronto residents approve of the subway extension. 60% do not.

The only group of people who supported this subway are Ford voters. Tory is selling our city out because of his fear of Doug Ford.
 
I think its too late to connect the LRT to the Eglinton line, so someone has to find a way of making this STC LRT continuous to the core to actually get the support needed to change plans again. It could follow Gatineau Hydro corridor, Ellesmere, or Lawrence to the DVP and then makes its way downtown. It could likely be done for the $4B that the B-D subway extension would cost.

We know that if anyone pushes the same LRT with transfer at Kennedy, it will just result in more delays, more cost increases, and the entire transit plans held hostage until this is resolved.
Offer Scarborough a continuous, grade-separated transit line to the core and everyone could get behind it - both LRT supporters and subway proponents. It could also serve Centennial and Malvern, plus eliminates the idea of looping Sheppard down the B-D line.
 
Who ironically don't even use the subways themselves much.

"Fiscal conservatives" and their spendthrift ways
They want the subway to increase their property value and the same people who would oppose development in their neighbourhood. They also hope it will decrease traffic, remove buses near their homes so they can drive faster. Also the ones who oppose any additional tax as development somewhere else will pay for it. It's called the win-win-win-win-win-win situation for them. According to Ford, subways last over 100 years without maintenance.

Look at the number of people who don't realize the Gardiner needs maintenance. All they talked about is a toll to pay for transit but not maintenance.

I was told the Eglinton Line and Crosstown East are continuous, so that's done. Looks like they're stuck with the subway and Sheppard East at this point.
 

It matters a lot how the poll questions are worded. The majority of respondents had vaguely heard of the subway vs LRT debate, but that issue is not on top of their minds. When they hear a question worded in a way favorable for LRT (such as, 7 stops vs one stop), they are likely to say that they prefer LRT.

The same people might end up voting for a pro-subway candidate in the municipal and provincial elections, if he / she presents the case for subway in a favorable fashion.

Those local councillors are not stupid; they would support LRT themselves if they knew that their consituents prefer LRT.

If the majority of local councillors are in favor of subway, that's probably a more accurate indicator of the voters' preferences than the poll.

That's an interesting idea, but don't you think it will cost quite a bit more than $4B to build a brand-new LRT line that goes from Scarborough Centre all the way into downtown, necessarily being underground in the downtown area?
