I didn't think that we disagreed, although I will still argue that you can't use the Hinton (or any other heavy rail accident) as a basis on which to argue subway safety..
It wasn't meant to be a basis on which to argue safety. It was meant to be an example of one safety device failing to work as designed. Don't read too deeply into it.
In any form of engineering, saying "it's near impossible" is a recipe for disaster.
I'm confident that another Russel Hill won't happen in my lifetime. But yet I still want the TTC to have disaster response plans in case it does. Is that unreasonable?
