Cycling: West Toronto Railpath (City of Toronto, Phase II Proposed)

Say it ain't so! I wonder if, over the next year, they can carve out some time to touch up the blue-green gradient mural? Now that the greenery has died (or maybe been trimmed back?) there's a big blank space. I'm talking about this one:

For the time they're taking and the charge-back to the City (Mx is the builder here), you'd think the entire thing was going to paved in granite; but tis not so.

City of Toronto and the Government of Canada announce agreement to fund West Toronto Railpath Extension

Earlier today, the City of Toronto and Government of Canada announced a partnership to fund the extension of the popular West Toronto Railpath multi-use trail that will connect Toronto’s residents and visitors with new areas of the city.


Under the funding agreement announced by Councillor Alejandra Bravo (Davenport) and Julie Dzerowicz, Member of Parliament for Davenport, the Government of Canada will provide $23 million from its Active Transportation Fund (https://can01.safelinks.protection....6v9TsqL4CEUNSDRbGPo79pggzUlpsbFfo=&reserved=0), while the City will contribute $125.7 million.

The project will see the existing 2.1-kilometre trail doubled in length, with an additional two kilometres of trail extending south from Dundas Street West at Sterling Road to Abell Street at Sudbury Street, as well as the construction of four new pedestrian-cycle bridges. Construction will begin in mid-2025.

The extension is part of the City’s Major City-wide Cycling Routes under the Cycling Network Plan and will encourage sustainable transportation options by making it easier for commuters to connect to the Bloor GO Station and the upcoming King-Liberty Station.

A 75M per km bike trail.

Really?

Who is Mx trying to fool here?

That is a completely and utterly ridiculous cost and clearly involves spending not legitimately assigned to this project.

We're getting into U.S. Army $600 per toilet seat scandal territory here.

as well as the bridges which are not cheap.

This is true, but they are not 100M expensive, at least not if properly designed and tendered..........not even close.

Let me beef this up.......the much larger, and vastly more costly design for the Keating pedestrian bridge is budgeted at 12M.

A basic truss bridge is nowhere near that expensive.

^ I guess the challenge with this is that we'll never see a detailed/breakdown line by line of the cost?

Maybe if someone felt like filing an FOI ......(Freedom of Information request). Otherwise, I'm not expecting any such thing.
 
How does that work? Martin Goodman is at the lake shore, this trail never goes south of the Kitchener Line.

Not sure of details but a connection from Sudbury down to Lake is envisioned probably on roads.
Sure, but then that's not really noteworthy. Just sounds like trying to link these things together to create some kinda buzz. Provided the expansion hooks into the surrounding network of lanes and cycle tracks it's going to get people to all kinds of destinations.

They already built a bidirectional cycle track along Douro that basically gets you almost to Sudbury & King, continuing that on the south side of King from Sudbury to Douro would get you the rest of the way. Precedents for this exist on Dufferin from Florence to Waterloo and College from Borden to Bellevue. A bridge would be nicer and provide a better connection for trail users however I suspect they are stopping at Abell with this phase because the section from Abell to King is where the hard choices are owing to the townhouses on the south side East of Dovercourt.
