Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

I'm curious, what's the backstory with Sanscon?

A long trail of projects with deficiencies, some comparatively minor..........some so bad the project had to be substantially re-done.

Sometimes they're just tied to a project that moves far too slowly, and looks a bit sloppy in spots. See KQQR intersection.

Generally wherever they can be found in the City you can expect the original completion date to be missed, and you can expect the work quality to be disappointing.
 
Also the College Street track refresh/cycle track install that somehow took 2 years instead of one. I think it still has outstanding finishing touches as last week I saw bike signals still hadn't been activated. :mad:
 
Work on this has started - about 2 weeks now.
Well - they've been doing work on the stretch of Pape from O'Connor to the Donlands intersection.

I popped by the area. As noted by Gabriel, not a ton to see.

The intersection itself isn't yet being dug up, but temporary traffic lights, not yet active, have been strung.

To the south, along Pape we see major road resurfacing underway in the Southbound lanes.

For those not familiar w/the various levels of road work.

Milling; (shaving the top layer of asphalt off, then repaving for a smooth finish)

Major Road Resurfacing (generally removing all asphalt, down to the concrete base, but leaving the base)

Road Reconstruction (rebuilding the road including the concrete base)

I literally thought those pictures were Mississauga until I realized from the description and the poster name that they're in York Region lol.

Recommendations​

Councillor Chris Moise, seconded by Councillor Paula Fletcher, recommends that:

1. City Council amend Parks, Forestry and Recreation’s 2024 Capital Budget and 2025-2033 Capital Plan for the New Accessibility Riverdale and Lower Don sub-project in the Facility Components project, in the amount of $2.700 million, increasing the total project cost from $3.100 million to $5.800 million, with cash flow commitments in 2024, fully funded by the South District Parkland Development Reserve Fund (XR2209) in order for the Lower Don Trail Improvements to continue construction.

Summary​

This motion requests authority from City Council to amend the 2024-2033 Capital Budget and Plan for Parks, Forestry and Recreation (PFR) in the amount of $2.700 million for the Lower Don Trail Improvements project. Additional funds are required to address unforeseen unstable soil conditions discovered during construction, necessitating redesign and modified construction methods. This project is being completed in coordination with the City’s Transportation Services Division. The total project cost share included in Parks, Forestry and Recreation’s Capital Budget and Plan would be amended from $3.100 million to $5.800 million with cash flow commitments in 2024. The improvements will be fully funded from the South District Parkland Development Reserve Fund (XR2209). These funds have been received and are eligible for these purposes.

This motion is deemed urgent as the funds are required to proceed with the Purchase Order Amendment for the construction contract, which is before the May 1, 2024 General Government Committee meeting for consideration.

The Lake to Lake route, a 121-kilometre multi-use path from the shores of Lake Simcoe to Lake Ontario, is now within a few years of being complete.

What still needs to be done?
  • In Richmond Hill, work on a section along Bayview Avenue between Bloomington Road and Bayview Park Lane will begin in 2024, the region has confirmed.
  • Construction of an off-road section along 19th Avenue between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street, an area sprouting with new subdivisions, is set to begin in 2025 and finish in 2027, the City of Richmond Hill said.
  • The region is still determining timing of a final Richmond Hill section of the Lake to Lake on Bayview Avenue between Bayview Park Lane and Stouffville Road.
  • The region has said the remaining East Gwillimbury sections of the Lake to Lake are scheduled for completion in 2026.

What is a “bike-friendly street”? Is it one that has sharrows (hah!)? Is it a low-traffic street? Or one with those “Share the road” signs?

Or are they streets with bike-specific infrastructure such as painted lanes (and if we’re lucky, hardened infra)?

The portion in southern York Region is mostly on Leslie Street (south of 19th Avenue), its a multi-use trail, (pedestrians and cyclists) on the west side of Leslie, above the curb. Some sections have additional boulevard between the vehicle lanes and the MUP while others are up against the curb:
