I've had a death in the family and am looking for a cheap flight to the New York area (preferably Newark). Leaving tomorrow and coming back Tuesday. Tried Expedia but there seems nothing cheaper than $1100 return. Any suggestions?
If you have time, and want to cut costs, are you okay for flying from Buffalo? There's five buses a day (MegaBus/Coach Canada) that directly serve the airport terminal, though it is a pain - a 2.5 hour bus trip.
E7: My condolences on your family loss. I read this topic and I noticed no one mentioned a "Bereavement Fare" that airlines sometimes offer for situations like this. I know people who have gotten fares of this type to respond to deaths in a family being a good example.
I also noticed elsewhere after the Buffalo-area plane crash recently that by flying out of Buffalo-Niagara International Airport by shopping that you can save on air fares substantially compared to Toronto Pearson International.
I have heard of "Airport Shopping" to save on fares-a prime example I recall was when US AIR controlled most Philadelphia International Airport traffic was to go to the NYC area airports or Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton to save on fares. In recent years-especially after Southwest Airlines entered the PHL market- those high fares on US AIR have eased somewhat.
Another thought: Trying Amtrak/VIA from Toronto-NYP leaving tomorrow and returning to Toronto Tuesday night-I suspect you may be able to get reservations-and for far less then $1100 CDN!
