Tulse:

Even when it wasn't a derelict, a relatively modern, nondescript liner is the last thing that's iconic.

AoD

Pretty sure they mean iconic in the sense that it has been a permanent fixture in that spot for decades. Not everything 'iconic' has to be a good thing.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this Toronto pier
Aboard this big long ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
Captain John brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The big ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Jadran would be lost, the Jadran would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted Ontario isle
With Gilligan,
Captain John too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star
The professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

So this is the tale of the castaways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.

The first mate and the Skipper too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the Ontario island nest.

No smartphones, no lights, no streetcars,
Not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
As primitive as can be.

So join us here each week my friends,
You're sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castaways,
Here on "Gilligan's Isle."

With apologies to Gilligan's Isle, if possible.

Iconic? Is that what the term has depreciated to?

AoD

I would say iconic is an appropriate term, if we take icon to mean a symbolic representation of something larger. As many have already mentioned, Captain John's is a symbol of Toronto's cheesy 70s-80s era: the "Yonge Street is Fun Street" era when people thought that the best way to attract families and "respectable" people back downtown was with cheesy gimmicks.

Exactly. The word "iconic" is absolutely appropriate. A rusting hulk can be iconic if it is representational of an era, which this certainly was. An icon doesn't have to be attractive, functional or liked by anyone.
