Brampton Transit/Zum

The Brampton budget is out and while it features no additional service hours, it also doesn't have any decrease in service hours that were already added (it is likely that some hours budgeted to be added last year were never implemented, and while that means the budgeted hours are theoretically fewer in number, hours are delivered not cut). The bad news is frequency will likely still worsen due to extended run times from congestion.

On a more positive note, there is $20 million in funds for growth 40ft buses, and $24 million in funds for growth 60ft buses. Furthermore there is money allocated for advancing both the Queen Street BRT and Steeles RT projects

It's good to hear there's money for growth and the BRT. The only thing is the time sitting and waiting for them to move on projects that are sorely needed.

It turns out I was severely mistaken, while the budget shows them under the transit budget section they aren't actually funded and will only be approved when Council gets a quarterly report on DCs and decides they are a priority to fund with the DC revenue.

That's fair. I felt like it would have been premature if they allocated funds given how much services have been cut down since last year.

Let's see what the new year brings.

For anyone curious about service hour changes at Brampton Transit here is a service summary which also includes MiWay for comparisons sake, comparing pre-pandemic levels (March 2020), levels towards the end of the pandemic (November 2023) and then more current dates (September 2025 and January 2026).

Brampton had been making tremendous progress having added over 214K annual hours in the period between November 2023 and September 2025. However, in the short time between September 2025 and January 2026 Brampton has already cut 45K annual hours out of the schedule. Keep in mind that about 7.5K of those hours would be relating to the end of the Goreway Drive bridge construction detours.

Although the City's 2026 budget doesn't include service hour growth, it doesn't explicitly mention cuts either. In fact there is a $10M line item titled "service hour stabilization" with no further details provided. Further to this Patrick Brown was quoted in the Guardian yesterday that transit service cuts are needed. Given that further ridership loss is anticipated I would not be surprised to see further cuts down the road.
