Rice doesn't actually have that much taste... I can't imagine what anyone can find so gross about it.
I prefer the dishes the other soups to Pho. Perhaps because Pho doesn't have fish sauce and is what defines Vietnamese food and Pho has no fish sauce, I don't knowi. I prefer the vermecelli soups: bun rieu, bun bo hue (with solidified pork blood, mmm!), bun nuoc leo, bun mam, etc. Of course, the best are dry rice or non-soup vermicelli dishes, but some restaurants only have good selection of pho but not much selection and/or quality for the rest.
