At the North Market this morning, Metropolitan Toronto's 1959 draft Official Plan. 300 pages of of text and graphs planning the area to 1980. On top of that 70 plus maps including some that fold out to 2 x 3 feet!

Price? $10!

Amazing find.

Cool. It'll be fun to see what was actually followed through on, and what is radically different.

How about a 'bring your rare items' meet?

The Sunday Market's also a great resource for putting together a library of books about Toronto. Several of the regular dealers - Bernie, who sets up near the nort-west corner, for instance - specialize in it.

A couple of weeks ago one of the dealers had a book of aerial photographs of the city taken in 1973, with comparisons to how the same sites looked in the '30s, '40s and '50s. What was most remarkable about that 1973 snapshot of different locations was the sheer number, and similarity of design, of all the Modernist apartment buildings that had gone up in the post-WW2 boom years.

I bought that one at the Market a few years back
