Dubai... aka Do-buy... now Du-bye-bye.

I dunno, but I just couldn't get into all those absurd edifices climbing out of a sandbox. Each new project shouted its arrival and I just wanted the place to stfu.

I'm interested in seeing what established cities do with their built-form. And (new) Dubai made no sense to me. It was one centerfold after another but one look, and into the recycle bin. Admittedly I looked before tossing.

I'm glad the chest-thumping, skyscrapers that will touch the Moon environment has gone on hold.

A little silence is welcome. Maybe there's a chance to hear a subtle song being sung.

It's been discussed on this forum quite a bit recently.

No city in the history of time has had the economic explosion required to build on such a scale so rapidly... which makes it absurd for for a city like Dubai to start building as if it's NYC, Tokyo or Shenzhen (which is the only city that could even begin to rival Dubai's growth, although like Dubai it's a planned city, unlike Dubai it's now growing organically - something Dubai will probably never achieve in ourlifetimes).

I can't wait to go there in 20 years and experience the modern ruins of Dubai... I wonder if they'll even bother to bring down the cranes.

Best of all, no more Dubai threads cluttering up the forums at SSP and SSC.

Dafinately!! If every building is iconic in a city, the fact that it's iconic will lose siginificance!
And it'll be kisch!

They would probably be better off to stop everything right now, empty all the buildings and market the place as a modern day ghost town. People would go in droves.

Skyscraper porn? As usual, Rem Koolhaas had it first

Thanks for the clarification/reminder--though the volume it's in is his conception, or at least credited as such; so, respecting that particular fact...

Though the image did grace the original cover of Delirious, it was originally part of a short (approx. 30 min) film of the same name (Flagrant Delit) in which the Statue of Liberty has a wild romp around town.

Here is a short snippet from the 'Tube, but beware, it's kind of...odd...

Link.

The ruins of Dubai! It would seem to me to be like a post-apocalyptic ghost town from the future where large parts of the Earth have been swallowed by desert.

I've purposely not informed myself nor perused photos or video of what's been going on in Dubai. Their over-zealous building based on oil (oil! are they kidding?) is kinda scary.

ProjectEnd:thanks for that link.....a delightful oddity, that was!

Ironically it wasn't based on oil at all.

I think in a way a lot of people are hypocrites when it comes to Dubai. Everyone dismisses the architecture as junk, but I'm sure if a few of those projects were going up here a lot of forum members would be ecstatic.
