2025 Canadian General Election

There's a reason the party turfed him in 2015.

Idiocy.

Hindsight is 20/20 but truthfully he wasn't the next Jack Layton. Jack was the best PM we never had.

Jack was unlikely to ever be PM. Jack was a genuinely nice guy, and very folksy.......but he didn't have the political machine that could deliver. Mulcair gave him that in Quebec.

Tom was ok but he was in over his head.

Tom was not in over his head, he's an extremely smart guy and frankly deserves much of the credit for Jack's success in Quebec. He was the party's Quebec Lieutenant and he suggested Jack go on Tous le monde en parles where he did really well.

My formerly good friend Dan Harris was the NDP MP for Scarborough Southwest and I was on their executive at the time.

I had insight into the NDP from 2011 to 2015 and made a few connections in Ottawa. Tom wasn't terrible but everyone had lofty expectations after Jacks rise to power that he couldn't meet.

Yes. Jack was the best PM we never had. Tom was just too arrogant and nicked name "Angry Tom" even by some his own supporters! But he was never a real NDPer. Back in his Liberal party days, he was very pro free market and spoke against unions. Not something traditional NDPers stand for.

I think they misread the country as hating Trudeau, when I think it was rather that they were tired of Trudeau. Their base hate Trudeau in their bones, but most people just wanted a change at the top. They thought PP could coast to victory on a wave of Trudeau hatred, and to be fair, their support is holding up. Carney is riding on the collapse of the NDP vote.

The other thing is that Liberal voters are motivated. One of the reasons the party collapsed in 2011 is that many of their soft supporters stayed home, though some would have switched to Layton’s NDP. There was probably some of that in 2019 and 2021 as well. Not going to happen this time.

As a fair weather voter for the NDP who has voted Liberal in Brampton and York Centre, the only reason I’d vote for NDP is because of the riding I’m in. I’m angry that the Liberals dumped Evan Solomon here. It’s definitely not a vote for the soulless central party organization or the hapless Jagmeet Singh.

In my opinion that was one of his many faults.

Jagmeet was more concerned with himself and hearing himself talk than doing what was needed for Canadians.

Yes, it did give time for the liberals to rediscover themselves but at the same time he needed to read the room.

I'm sorry but he didn't do himself any favors propping up Trudeau
Propping up the LPC or we would ended up with CCP majority, so that's not bad thing at all at the end of the day. They would of been monstrously worse. And we would of been crossing that divisive Rubicon like the States are currently doing today.

...that said, I do agree that Singh was far more interested in playing politics than being a leader or doing the right thing. And only then doing the right thing when it suited playing politics. What an ambitious but spineless character, IMO.

I always liked Mulcair because his views landed in that blurry area where the Liberals and NDP overlap, right where I usually find myself.

Jagmeet Singh I met in law school, and while I know he's a great guy, it hasn't translated into successful leadership of the party.

This winning probability chart from the Poll Tracker on the CBC website is absolutely insane.

Pretty ambitious Housting Policy announced by the Carney campaign today.

Carney unveils signature housing plan he says will double pace of home building in Canada

'We solved a housing crisis before in our past, we can solve the housing crisis now,' said Liberal leader.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-double-pace-home-building-1.7497947
Policy promises to double the number of homes built annually in Canada to nearly 500,000.

Some details:
  • Says says he would create an entity called Build Canada Homes (BCH) that would act as a developer overseeing the construction of affordable housing in Canada. BCH would be a stand-alone entity, rather than being placed under the stewardship of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)
  • BCH will supply $25 billion in debt financing and $1 billion in equity financing to "innovative Canadian prefabricated home builders."
  • BCH will also provide $10 billion in low-cost financing and grants that it will then funnel into different affordable home building streams. About $2 billion of that will be used to help build housing for students and seniors
  • Promises to cut municipal development charges in half for a period of five years by helping cities make up the cost of that lost revenue
  • Also commits to bringing back a tax incentive that was introduced in 1974 and ended in 1981 called the Multiple Unit Rental Building (MURB) cost allowance. It was credited with encouraging the construction of about 195,000 units at a cost of $2.4 billion in forgone taxes.
  • He would also boost the Housing Accelerator Fund, pledging to speed up approval timelines and publicly report on its progress. Its objective is to build 100,000 more housing units across the country than what would have been built without the fund by streamlining land-use planning and development approvals.
My two cents: This will be tough to execute but points for ambition. His government will need to significantly pressure provinces like Ontario that have been reluctant to institute necessary reforms to address housing affordability.

I don't trust this guy with affordable housing!!! If he even does build housing he will use the cheapest non union tradesmen! Carney is a Red Tory.

I don't trust anyone about "affordable" housing. We need social housing, lots of it. But a red Tory is better than Poilievre.

I really don't want us to emulate the Americans - those Democrats who didn't vote for Harris because of Gaza, or because Biden presided over a vastly higher number of COVID deaths than Trump while claiming he had beaten the disease.

I'm fine w/this statement........subject to one condition.

In the alternative, which party, with a credible chance of obtaining office has a better or more credible housing package on offer?

If the answer is none, your point is somewhat moot, no?

If the answer is 'party x' please identify the party and policy package for our collective consideration.

I don't believe we will get social housing under Carney, he's saying it for votes. Carney rubs me the wrong way, but he is the lesser of two evils. We really don't have much choice this election. If we had a President Kamala Harris, Canada's election would be a lot different. This election all the important Canadian issues have taken a back seat. It's is all about who is best suited to deal with Donald Trump! It's awful.
