2023 Ontario Liberal Leadership Race

Never say "nothing". McGuinty was elected Lib leader as the most conservative candidate on the leadership ballot IIRC.

It was Gerard Kennedy who was the front runner in that race, a left-leaning Liberal much like Nate Erskine-Smith. There was a strong "anyone but Kennedy" sentiment, which resulted in McGuinty, who wasn't really offensive to anyone in the party. Remember, he did win two back-to-back majorities (though in the 1999 election, Harris still won, but the OLP added seats despite a cut in the number of MPPs).

Thanks for the reminder that even if the "right wing" won, the "stop X" dynamic in '96 was the inverse of '23.

Possible civil war brewing among OLP membership, although the OLP caucus appears to be rallying behind Crombie.

‘Tired of this crap’: Liberal MPPs rally around Bonnie Crombie after criticism from Nate Erskine-Smith

Erskine-Smith criticized Crombie and her team for “trying to socialize the idea that an untenable 51 per cent mandate is an acceptable result” at the September review, insisting “two-thirds support should be the minimum expectation.”

Sources told the Star that some Liberals have privately complained to Carney’s office about the MP’s intervention Friday.

But given Erskine-Smith’s public grumbling that he felt ”disrespected” when the prime minister removed him from cabinet, it’s unlikely any such appeal would have much effect.

Liberal MPPs, meanwhile, took to social media to defend Crombie with some choice words for the backbencher.

It sure sounds like Nate Erskine-Smith is pretty pissed and not worried about pissing off leadership. Not sure if he doesn't plan to seek re-election or hopes that standing outside the tent pissing in will make Carney consider inviting him to Cabinet or some other position to keep him quiet.

He (NES) has been a great MP for my riding. I love his independence, intelligence, and not toeing the party line. I think he's pissing in some cornflakes, and am not sure it's a long-term great idea. But Crombie did not inspire at all in the last Ontario election. How could she (and the party) have been so unready for a campaign that was telegraphed for months??

Got a message from "Team NES" today. "We now have a choice: do we let our current leader try again, or do we find another leader who can beat Doug Ford?"
