How did Thomas Mulcair screw things up.?
Basically he was pretty smart and had the NDP in a winning position until the radicals in the party were exposed.
The only thing he could (should) have done differently is to concentrate on keeping the Liberals in 3rd place - so that the NDP would be viewed as the natural alternative to the CPC - instead of actually going after Harper.

The media consensus was that Mulclair moved the party too far to the centre, allowing Trudeau to claim the progressive "change" slot that was far more appealing to the electorate.

Ironically, in moving to back to the left in 2019, the NDP is doing far worse. In the most recent Mainstreet poll they are at 8% support nationally. I don't think they have hit that low since the mid 90s.

The problem is that left for the NDP is grassroots activism that isn't appealing to the population at large. People want a better quality of life, lower taxes and so forth. They don't want to elect PETA, CUPE or IATSE.

The NDP has a socialist wing and even mildly communist overtones. Hell I once got booted from my local riding association because I was deemed a communist.

I then joined the Communist Party of Canada. I'd vote Communist if they had a candidate in my riding.

Its worth saying, the media consensus was a load of something or other.............

Noting that I gave a non-partisan analysis of the platforms here last time out............the NDP ran to the left of the Liberals on pharmacare and childcare, and were squarely in favour of raising corporate tax.

The only area of the platform where the NDP were to the 'right' of the Libs was that they committed to a balanced budget (funded by tax hikes).

I think that was responsible and sensible.

Which is not antithetical to progressive politics.

I think the media sold a line to the public on this Libs to the left business.

The Libs certainly did go further left that usual, and they had 2 stand-out policies that appealed to centre-left/young voters, electoral reform and pot.

They delivered one........

I say that, as someone who has voted Liberal at times in the past and may well do so again.........

I am just sick of Liberal and Consverative govts running this country with arrogance and dominance when they actually have rather limited support.

Even if we had proportional representation or ranked ballots, you'd still get majority governments with limited support. It's a Westminster parliamentary system, you vote for your MP, not the PM.

IMO, we have a great country. In the last year I've been to Germany, Austria, Holland, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, China (Shanghai + Hong Kong), South Korea and like most Canadians to the USA (Seattle, San Francisco and Alaska). Before that I was in Israel, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovenia and the UK. Canada isn't perfect, but every time I come home I thank my lucky stars for living here.
