    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

I'm not sure what went through GO Transit's head today, but they started checking presto cards right in the York Concourse before allowing people up the stairs. There were people arriving for a Lakeshore westbound express train at 5pm, and a westbound all-stops at 5:10, and these guys want to...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

I've thought about this comment, and have watched how the crowd splits out of Mimico as they depart the tunnel when I myself arrive. Left is towards Royal York, which are walkers or people catching the 76 bus. Right is the parking lot (330 spots?) or walking to parts east or north east, or a few...

    Mimico

Instead of crowdfunding the shuttle to Mimico GO station, would it make sense to modify or redesign from scratch the existing route 145 humber bay express bus? The TTC-GO connecting fare discounts might make it worthy of a re-think. http://www.ttc.ca/Routes/145/RouteDescription.jsp?tabName=map

    Toronto 327 Royal York Road | 118.5m | 35s | VANDYK | SvN

After a few months of nothing happening, there is some worker activity on the site over the past week. The large crane has been removed, for example.

    Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

Look at streetview of the alley beside Bardi's. The wall was covered in those coloured tiles for as long as I remember it. They are removing the tiles for some reason.

    Evocative Images of Lost Toronto

I was walking up York this morning, and saw they are re-facing the wall in the alley along Bardi's steakhouse, revealing what was underneath. The wall is a large advertisment for the Midway Sewing Machine Company, Est 1878. Not sure if this the right thread, and not a great quality shot...

Toronto Architecture From The 1960's and 70's

I've been curious as well, and poked at this question once in a while. For background, there's links in this thread to pictures of the cinema entrance and cinema: http://urbantoronto.ca/forum/showthread.php/2359-Cdn-Architect-on-Mies-TD-Centre-Cinema...

Toronto Architecture From The 1960's and 70's

Thanks! I've been looking for a picture that shows that view before the Ernst and Young tower was put up over the Stock Exchange. I've been wondering where those steps down to the concourse actually were, as people mention them as the quickest way to the former TD Centre Cinema.

Cdn Architect on Mies' TD Centre Cinema

Following up on a really old thread, I noticed the original link has gone bad. Here's one with the cinema photos. http://telekino.blogspot.ca/2006/02/gone-but-forgotten-td-centre-cinema.html

When do you merge in a merging lane?

Mathematically, merging late when the lanes are full is best for both the merger and mergee. It does come down to a 1:1 turn-taking situation. If people merge early, it tips the balance towards the merging lane. Early merging cars are essentially merging before they would in the 1:1 ratio...

Why has there been no serious deamalgamation campaign?

I don't know how Peel splits the responsibilities with the cities, but note that the Mississauga tax rate shows the City portion at about 38% of the City+Region total, similar to what I experienced in Metro Toronto pre-amalgamation (40%)...

Why has there been no serious deamalgamation campaign?

I don't know about Peel, but I recall Metro had some of the big-ticket items: - Police - TTC - Garbage disposal (not collection) - Highways - Some parks - Toronto islands - etc A City under Metro had the rest: - Bylaws, zoning - garbage collection - roads, snow removal - parks and...

Why has there been no serious deamalgamation campaign?

If I recall, prior to amalgamation, there were three components to the tax bill: - metro level - city level - school board At amalgamation, the province downloaded social program costs, but assumed the school board costs. They had a separate program to rationalize schoolboards. I can't...
