Go for it. But, if your goal is more than just build homes, then the infrastructure needs to be in place. The challenge is that the infrastructure is usually put on to the existing taxpayer. The price of that house/condo you buy should include everything to get it there, not just what is on the...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Making it a drinking game would be more fun.

The sad thing is, we need a housing boom across Canada. The Ottawa area is no different. Personally, if the developer will pay for all the needed infrastructure, including establishing a transit system, then go for it. Somehow we need to fix the system that allows the NIMBY to win against everything.

With the reduced baggage on the Corridor trains, can we expect the same on the Northlander since they are the same trains?

The only thing they could look at would be a tunnel to downtown/ I highly doubt that will happen though as it is an added expense with unknown ROI.Lets first get an HSR before thinking of a new Ottawa station.

The thing I have learned is that although on the surface they are quite different, to some people, they tend to be identical. They want nothing to change. Whether or not there is enough of them to stop a project like you suggest would remain to be seen. The best option would be to add to the...

There is a time to listen and a time to ignore. However, I bet if a new town were asked if they wanted a paper and pulp mill or a manure plant, you'd be hard pressed to find a location for one. Think of the former industries the city of Toronto had. Now imagine trying to bring those back. Most...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

They operate Fairchild Swearingen Metroliners which seat 19. The flight is short. Even a Sudbury - Toronto flight is under an hour. I am guessing under a half hour between Sudbury and North Bay. Driving takes just over a hour. So,flying between the 2 may not be that much faster when you think...

What existing provincial park is about that size?

It used to be you lived close to work. But,when the car came along, the move away from that happened. The fact politicians listen to that small group is the political angle of it.

You are assuming that CPKC would be any better to deal with. Via 185/1186 runs only on CPKC tracks and it is just as late as any other train. If your assumption were correct, it would not be late. This is a case of whoever is in charge does what is best for them.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

It still surprises me just how much that province lacks in transportation besides the all mighty car. I am not sure if it is a case of lack of demand, or an acceptance to what exists. It's along the line of is it a feature or a bug. The more I look into it, the more I think it is a feature...

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Distance wise, I agree. However, they have been arguing it for tourism, and it seemed like they left out a major tourist draw. A Banff - Calgary- Edmonton route does make sense. The fact they are pushing towards Grande Prairie and ignoring Lethbridge is kinda confusing.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

I was thinking that since they are the largest cities in their provinces, you would be able to fly between them. Saskatchewan really does not have any non car transportation to serve the province, https://www.flightsfrom.com/YSB-YYB Sudbury and North Bay has 1-2 flights and it is about 150km...

NIMBYism is one of the worst thing that has ever come out of politics. Ask someone if they want a homeless shelter, and they are for it. Ask if they want it in their neighbourhood and they will fight tooth and nail to stop it.

There are 2 stations between Ottawa and Montreal that are in ON; Casselman and Alexandria. Why not just build on the edge of those towns? It sounds like it would be easier than a greenfield build.

I'd imagine if the developers could buy enough land anything is possible. Most of it is farmland.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

There is a high demand for HSR it it is built right. Even if we say HSR will run once an hour, it has the potential of taking many of these flights away. Back out of the Corridor ... Interesting, there are more flights between Regina and Calgary than Regina and Saskatoon.

    Pickering Airport (Transport Canada/GTAA, Proposed)

I do agree with your sentiment. It is better to reserve it and never need it than to need it and not be able to build it.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Something I was wondering was how many flights between /Calgary and Edmonton. The link shows that 13-14 daily flights between them. Add to that the distance and this would be a no brainier for an HSR route. The question is whether the costs of it would be viable. For context, Toronto Pearson -...
