What's happened to transit advertising is the same thing that has happened to billboards and periodical advertising (in newspapers and magazines): over the last 20 years, marketers have shifted to online channels which offer much more targeted ads that are more effective at motivating action. In...

"It's a beautiful day out there." "Well it might SNOW tomorrow or be COLD later so let's just keep THAT in perspective."

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

At this point I'm starting to believe that HSR will use Doug Ford's 401 tunnel, with the station at the 407 subway stop.

My sense is that, if this service doesn't stop in Port Hope, four weird men are gonna hold their breath until they turn blue.

Beijing South Station is a 24-platform intermodal hub designed for a capacity of 240 million passengers per year. In terms of passenger and circulation space, it is more than three times the size of (post-renovation) Toronto Union. I really don't think you can compare it to Guildwood.

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

That's an awful lot of text, no?

It's one thing to replace the map, another thing to replace the underlying LED mechanism. The LED system is modifiable, but this is skilled work best done when you're overhauling the cars. Whereas any schmuck with a stepladder and a screwdriver can replace the map.

There's more than one sort of optics, though. If Doug Ford wants lots of media attention at the event where he formally opens the line, he's not going to schedule it during a period when lots of people are travelling and ignoring the news. In this sense, I think you're dead on with December 21...

Well. We kind of do, seeing as how they're on day 56 of a 30-day process. https://www.timeanddate.com/date/durationresult.html?m1=10&d1=7&y1=2025&m2=&d2=&y2=&ti=on

I do wonder if vending machines mean the TTC is giving up on the Cedarvale newsstand. Given how retail leases usually work, and given how tight the margins are on subway newsstands, I have to imagine that, in an environment like Cedarvale (where there's only one retail unit), the tenant would...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Having your infrastructure bombed to smithereens makes it remarkably cheap and easy to rebuild it. Rubble is cheap to expropriate, and you can freely draw tidy lines on a map without disrupting other uses. It's a great solution, so long as you're comfortable with a few million people dying.

    VIA Rail

Certainly VIA seems capable of selling out longer trains than they've historically run, despite higher ticket prices.

    Finch West Line 6 LRT

At the risk of sounding like I've got an Obama-era hangover, faster transit is generally better than slower transit, but transit doesn't have to be faster to be better. For one thing, regardless of the speed at which it operates, the LRT should offer more predictable and consistent service than...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

And I was replying to someone who disagrees. 💁‍♂️ VIA Rail does not draw its lines by accident. They are extremely attuned to the need for political support for their projects, and snubbing Kingston in favour of Peterborough was a conscious, deliberate choice which they knew would carry...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

    3. To appease Peterborough, which is currently excluded from the rail network, and has historically been one of the flip-floppiest federal and provincial ridings.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

It is true that there is a significant population east of Quebec City. It is also true that this population is not arranged into the sorts of population centres you could efficiently serve with a high speed rail corridor between Quebec City and Halifax. We're talking about building 800...

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

Damn, I'd already forgotten the coach terminal ever existed. Yes, this is probably nearer to the truth.

    TTC Cartography, Signage, and Wayfinding

I don't believe Ontario Northland ever stopped serving Union Station. It's just been a bus service instead of a train service.

Per Steve Munro, as of October, the 32 and 34 still factored into the TTC's planning for a post-Crosstown bus network. https://stevemunro.ca/2025/10/09/ttc-service-changes-effective-october-12-2025/
