General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Not entirely true. If the government is acting in a reckless or wanton disregard for the safety or lives of others, then they can be, and have been, successfully sued. At least federally. See Taylor v. Canada (Attorney General), 2011 where Health Canada was sued. I doubt this act can avoid...

    VIA Rail

I don't think it matters much given they have the same ownership - though some do want to Chuck him. To be fair, that image was released by Transport Canada - in the July 2021 Ministry announcements by the Ministry and Via Rail. So not VIA ABC-DEF. It showed the use of the Winchester sub all...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

What politics are you suggesting are preventing people from being able to use them?

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Their first saying that removing the bike lanes won't effect safety - and now protect themselves so they don't get sued, is the kind of stuff that doesn't sell well with the electorate - if they bike or not. This may get fun.

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

I really don't know how they can push the city to do this. Even for priority projects, these kind of things can take years, for areas that have had new curbs, etc., installed. If the province won't even fund the city properly to do the work - and is only absolving itself for liability, and not...

    VIA Rail

At one point, VIA printed a proposed map that in addition to using the existing VIA Rail-owned corridors from Smith Falls and Coteau to Ottawa, that the (presumably Toronto to Montreal) service could also skip Ottawa and use on more southerly CP Winchester Sub through Chesterville, Monkland...

I guess the USA was lucky that the glaciers carved out those canals for them. If only we had a waterway that stretched from Chicago one way, to the Atlantic Ocean near Halifax the other way, connecting to most of the major cities in Central Canada.

And yet we do. On roads with bike lanes, car lanes, and an intermittent parking lane, a patio currently is on a few parking spots. We don't need to preserve parking spots that desperately.

That said, the road widths in LA in the older areas are massive; and the lanes seem much wider too. And so many lanes. Bike lane installation easily, would be an unintended benefit.

That surprises me - but I don't often travel through there. I'm not sure I believe that one. I frequently drove through there on my recent commute. Nothing noteworthy about that one. I've seen far worse - even on days I drove through that one!

General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

The connections are certainly not as clear with budget issues. I'm not sure how closing YTZ (and Toronto's only air ambulance base!) saves lives. Budget items don't need engineer sign-off. Engineers are required to always put human life first - ahead of client and other public interests...

Road Safety & Vision Zero Plan

Yes - but on the other hand, to improve road safety those that would prioritize convenience over an increased death toll, may need a deeper understanding of the issues and consequences.

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

On a nice day. If there's no covered walkway, I'll certainly be staying on the (somewhat) covered platform. Though if there's strong cold wind, the shelter of the outdoor walkway becomes an advantage.

Hopefully any professional engineer who signs off on the construction plans to remove and downgrade bike lanes, which leads to increased deaths, is disciplined and loses their licence to practice engineering.

    Pickering Airport (Transport Canada/GTAA, Proposed)

As a passenger airport, I agree.

One would assume they can walk down the GO platform, and then use the connection there to the subway station.

    Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

Maybe future-proofing? Similar to how the right-hand-lane under the newish rail underpass on Dufferin at Queen was also designed for streetcars (shame it wasn't designed for proper bike lanes).

    General railway discussions

We certainly aren't there yet. But the whole thing isn't as absurd as it would have sounded 20 years ago. I did say decades away in my original post. My point was it would take some world-changing technology change - like how engines advanced to the point that diesel displaced coal. I don't...

    General railway discussions

It's not financially feasible to electrify trans-continental freight lines with overhead. The only way it happens with batteries; preferably those that can be swapped out for pre-charges ones very quickly at a way station; similar to how the currently treat diesel for engines, and historically...

    General railway discussions

The way politics is going in North America, I see rules getting looser, not tighter. Sure, stuff get's old, but I don't think environment is going to make much impact. Would would make a difference is some technology change - like when diesel became a lot cheaper than coal. If batteries get a...
