    VIA Rail

GSM-R is on the way out and the future standard is still being worked out (it will be interesting to see what Metrolinx/GO’s ETCS looks like) https://www.railengineer.co.uk/migrating-from-gsm-r-to-frmcs/ There doesn’t seem to be anything fundamentally wrong with the current system of crossing...

Between P40s and LIRR C1s it’s almost like someone there is putting out railfan bait

My theory on this is that they will run short trainsets along with refurb cab cars, but enough of them to allow MP40s and their cabs to be pulled off the line for ECTS installation and testing.

Toronto Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport | ?m | ?s | Ports Toronto | Arup

One of the principles of modern government is that it operates with the consent of the governed. If you dispossess citizens who have broken no law and pay no compensation, other people who hold assets will start thinking it might happen to them, and that the government is generally not to be...

    VIA Rail

Either Air Canada has commercial control (the ability to forbid the rail operator to make codeshares other than with AC/Star Alliance) or it doesn’t. Transport Canada could presumably regulate the rail operator to require them to make any reservation system interface open to all operators that...

    VIA Rail

You’re assuming a common standard for “safety compliance” which doesn’t seem possible if railway companies are allowed to decide their own standards for crossing equipment. If Ventures don’t conform to industry norms, why wasn’t it picked up at TTCI, or when Brightline put them in service, or...

    General railway discussions

Firstly, I am taking everything @crs1026 as true as the current state of freight offering. That said, at some point we may have to confront the reality of an industry tuned to the convenience of shareholders rather than to maximize the ability to shift freight off the roads. (And by that I...

GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Having to permit Cargoflo routings to cross from the freight main through the GO west approach hardly helps there. If only it could be moved to somewhere on the North side of the Hamilton CN trackage.

It’s only a deficiency if the contract specified that the trainsets shunt all crossings. It’s up to Amtrak to assemble safe train lengths for a given route, so how can any individual coach be defined as “defective”? Amtrak is all in on Siemens and the company is building a politically...

    Toronto Public Library Catch-All

Pointing at every site and saying “zap, you’re residential” may not be the answer in all situations, especially if there was an opportunity to relocate a city department or agency office need above a library instead of shoehorning a residential lobby beside it.

    YRT/Viva Construction Thread (Rapidways, Terminals)

Is this government willing to push around bluer voting regions than the Toronto pinkos to that extent, though?

    YRT/Viva Construction Thread (Rapidways, Terminals)

10 minute scheduled service is not frequent in itself, at least not as transit operations are managed in this region. 10 minute service that arrives every 9-11 minutes absent actual force majeure can be seen as frequent.
