    VIA Rail

HSR and Intercity rail serve very different customers. HSR competes with those who would otherwise fly and Intercity Rail competes with those would otherwise either drive or take the bus. The fact that HSR is stealing customers from the airlines would do little to reduce demand for intercity...

Ontario Northland and Metrolinx sounds like a better example to me.

It’s quite simple. Do whatever the federal government tells them to.

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

Oh. I thought you lived near Sudbury, which has 3 buses a day to Toronto, so close to the 4 bus metric you were told. https://www.ontarionorthland.ca/communications/schedules/new/2023-09-15-SCHED-201-202-EN.PDF

Lack of meaningful Passenger Rail service outside the Quebec-Windsor Corridor

A motor coach has approximately 50 seats, and the three car trains that Ontario Northland will be using have roughly 175 seats,. So doing the math, once demand has passed what can be handled by 3 buses (approx 150 passengers) , thus 4 buses are required, they are approaching the capacity of a...

In places where the yellow "centre" line is an inch or two from the Jersey barrier that separates the two sides of the highway, then this would be an issue. In most cases there is a 10 foot shoulder between the yellow line and the Jersey barrier, which would add to the safety margin. The bigger...

What is your definition of reasonably priced? I would suspect that an HSR ticket would be about double what a VIA ticket costs today. For those who currently fly between Toronto-Ottawa/Montreal, HSR will be an attractive option, but for those who drive, it will likely be too expensive.

It depends on the cost differential. I gather the ventures have been approved for the “LRC” maximum speed of up to 100 mph on class 5 track, so you’re likely only looking at a 10% increase in maximum speed, and even then only if the geometry allows it.

Under that definition, a horse also counts as a vehicle, which brings to mind a piece of unrelated trivia, that apparently, the only vehicle one is allowed to operate while intoxicated is a horse.

Canada’s grade separation assessment guidelines can be found here. They were created in 2018 in response to the VIA Rail/OC Transpo bus collision.in 2013. I gather that before these were created, Canada didn’t have any official guidelines for where grade separations should be located and studies...

    VIA Rail

Fascinating! I didn’t realize there were so many trains between Montreal and Ottawa at one point. Hard to believe that for a brief period in 1967 there were 14 trains on Saturdays. I’m assuming that city pair was by far the busiest in the country, with Toronto-Montreal being a distant second...

Could you show a similar chart for Montreal-Ottawa? I would love to see an increase of the westbound Saturday service. Even in 2019 there were only 3 trains a day (oddly there were 4 trains eastbound). Sundays had 5 trains both ways and, as previously discussed, weekdays had 6 each way. This...

Certainly farmers and those who support them need to live in rural areas that are not very walkable, and I have no problems with that. I also don't judge those who choose to live in a car dependant neighbourhood. My issue comes when people choose to live somewhere car dependant and then feel...

People often mistakenly conflate density with high rises. Duplexes, townhomes, low rise apartments, and even small single family homes can provide significant density. The older parts of many small towns have decent density to start with, though things can gradually be made better. This! We...

    VIA Rail

Funny how this seems to only be an problem here in North America. Go to almost any other continent (or even Montreal here in Canada for that matter) and people live in dense neighbourhoods without significant issues. Interestingly often those places also have better train service. Makes you...

    VIA Rail

Fortunately there is enough traffic (by all modes, not just rail) in the Corridor to draw riders riders from to make the service self sustainable, and VIA doesn't have to look for alternate revenue streams, like land cruisers, to cover costs. The point is it needn't be limited to big cities...

    VIA Rail

I’m feeling like a broken record since he said this before but I’ll try again anyways Since land cruise customers don’t care how frequent the train is, It is cheaper to add extra cars to the existing train than it is to run an extra train. Besides, the biggest limitation to capacity for the...

So you think VIA could get thousands of rich foreign tourists a year to take the train from Toronto to Sudbury, and back as a luxury land cruise?

I agree that’s the best option but you’re taking my post out of context.

So you admit that it was your choice to live where are you do, but yet you want the government to pay you $1000 each time you want to go to Toronto (my guess is the approximate per passenger subsidy for the rail service you feel you deserve) because of the choice you made to live in a car...
