    Pickering Airport (Transport Canada/GTAA, Proposed)

Canada has some of the highest runway landing fees in the world (Pearson second in '03/'04, first in '05). I'm sure many carriers would be happy to move some or all service to a cheaper runway. Also, you are focusing solely on the passenger side. Pearson handled 482,518 tonnes of cargo and 31.9...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Stations on curves have accessiblity and/or operational issues. Generally, one tries to avoid putting stations on curves because the gap between the door threshold and the platform edge varies with where the doors are placed along the length of the car. GO train cars have two sets of doors...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

A stardard 12-car GO platform is 315m. Horizontally, you need about 10m. It would definately fit between King and Strachan. I suggested putting the station on the north side of the corridor on Douro St. there, as Western Battery is pretty built up now looking at Google Streetview. You could...

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

Ah ha, that makes more sense. Between King and Queen is all curve, and that's no-go with GO. You could take out Douro St. for a good station location though, or else you'd need to push it west of Dufferin/Queen and that puts you awfully close to Bloor GO Station.

GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

There isn't really much room for another station around LV. A 315m platform built adjacent to Exhibition GO Station, would extend over/under Dufferin. If you tried to shift it west away from Exhibition Station, you hit the curve, which isn't very great operationally, so GO won't built them...

Will Today's Condos be Around 150 Years From Now?

The big question is if global populations will peak in the next 50 years or not. If we peak, then many of the oldest high-density buildings probably will be torn down and smaller mixed-used buildings replace them. If we don't peak, then we might happen to go the other way and build bigger...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

If you'd kept reading, that was Mr. Munro's point, beyond his angry at Mayor Ford and Don Cherry belittling a wide segment of society. It falls in line with Mayor Ford's refusal to attend anything related to Pride. Maybe Steve should have held himself to a higher standard, but Don Cherry as a...

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

The most effective was to block and remvove advertisement from our public spaces is to buy the ad space for non-ads. Legally speaking, the City could ban privately owned billboards and other advertising surfaces, but for publically owned spaces, the City has just signed a 12-year deal that...

More customer service woes for the TTC

Are you suggesting 1/12 Canadians aren't fit for their jobs because they find their jobs stressful? Are you suggesting that it's better to be unemployed than to hold down a job that involves stressful situations beyond your control? Are you suggesting that employer's do not have a...

More customer service woes for the TTC

Everyone has the right to free speech, but every service provider has the right to refuse service. I guess it wasn't that big of an issue that she was 40 minutes late if she was willing to drag it out for half an hour or more. That said, drivers need to defer when in a confrontation. "Police...

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

You need to see the history of amalgamation in Toronto to follow the logic of fare structures. There is a good TTC fare history article on Toronto Transit. For those that haven't seen it, the new system advert deal report is found here. Somewhat related, McDonald's at Dundas West just...

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

I got thinking about alternative funding models, and what if they had a select number of seats near the driver that were available at a surcharge? Zonal charges using Presto makes sense as well, but politically charged. Instead of selling station names, so that they get heard on...

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

Sorry, $27 million per year for the contract term of 12 years. $324 million in total.

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

$27 million across the whole system against $1.6 billion operating budget across the whole system is $0.05 of a $3.00 fare. Dundas will be a fraction of that, but the $27m represents the risk/potential of the full system. They might get marginally more by including the name in an exclusive...

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

To be fair, it's $0.05 on a full $3.00 cash fare for the minimum $27m for 12-years. Also, losing riders would be a net revenue gain, as there still is a public subsidy on their fare. It would be a gross revenue lose still though. It's still a pitance, but it does represent $24 a year off the...

    Proposed renaming of Dundas Street

That's the problem, it won't. Let's say we could get $10m per year per subway station, that'd still only cover half of the TTC operating budget. Combine that with farebox revenue and you can cover operating costs, but not capital costs. I'm assuming naming rights for schools would go to the...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

They've improved the reliablity over the last 5-6 years, so now the failure rate is less than 1%. The technology could also be adapted for the Canadian climate as both Chicago and NYC use contact shoes on third rails on some mixed elevation lines. You just need good drainage and possible a...

    Monorail for Toronto

The Innovia 300 has a crush load of 502 with 64 seated (3.2 people per square metre using the above rectangle approximation), while a TC LRV has a crush load of 277 with 85 people seated (3.4 people per square metre). Having 12-Innovia cars together would be 150.3m long with 192 seats and 72.3k...

Food and drinks should not be allowed on the TTC

Freedom isn't free nor is it boundless, but that's besides the point. I personally find the TTC stations to be dirtier than the subway/buses, so I find it suprising you'd not count the transit system as one whole. Due the greyhound leg of my journey, if I delayed in my route at all it'd take...
