QEW - Mississauga/Credit River Project

The project has been mostly done waiting on the archeological dig for the better part of a year now. The bridge can't finish until they finish the dig so is sitting in it's current stage.

We need to be watching that archeological hole - when it gets backfilled, the rest of the project should wrap up and fall into place fairly quickly.

I admit I'm getting frustrated at how long it's taking. We are talking about 12+ months at this point - @Tim MacDonald 's photos from last January clearly show the area identified and protected for the dig.. Get on with it!
I think we are at the point where if they couldn't get what they needed after a year, it's time to close the book on it and finish the project. This is beyond ridiculous. Every time I have driven that stretch or photographed it, I've never seen anyone around it.

Don't know when you shot the photo, but its the same as mine shot October 4/25 and the same in 2024

No but it i
Anyone aware of an updated timeline on this project. It seems pretty quiet at the site.
No but it's completely held hostage by the so called archeological dig. At some point time limits on this stuff should be imposed. It's a complete joke.

Like this farce? "Indigenous ancestral remains found on Ontario property could cost this couple $319K"

I bet the longer the Credit River dig drags on, the more the professor(s), archeologists, and their assistants get paid.

Note to self, do not report anything your kid might find digging up your backyard. /s

Note to self - make the kids dig in neighbouring yards only. :)

Though the only thing in the former ravine behind my house that we dig up is 1910s ash and bottles. But who know what's deeper down.

I'm puzzled though - wouldn't the archaeological work be done years ago? Was there a discovery during construction? Sorry, I've not been following very closely.

Just wanted to confirm, is the archeological dig entirely confined to the area around the south of the new pedestrian bridge?

It is pretty disheartening driving by week after week at various times of day and not seeing a single soul on site. I understand the need for the dig but it would be a lot easier of a pill to swallow if there was some actual progress after months and months of the bridge being complete

Archeological work probably hampered by weather. And I don't know, the teaching and research schedule of the academics involved.

Some serious consideration for weighing the pros and cons of costing hundreds of thousands, if not millions of human-hours in traffic. Millions of dollars in productivity losses. Maybe next time they dig out large soil chunks en masse (at the risk of damaging or destroying some artifacts). This would probably be a net positive economically.

The political opposition to any cultural erasure would be vocal, even if I suspect a large part of the population don't actually care.

So there is no official update here from anywhere as yet? I thought they had hired an archeological firm to do the dig, which would have been normal, and more efficient then a university based team. Seems a bit odd as the actual dig appears to have concluded. I guess there is a process unfolding.....

This update was posted to the project website.

Critical works on the QEW Credit River Improvement Project were completed on schedule last year, including:
  • The new twin bridge, currently carrying both eastbound and westbound QEW traffic lanes;
  • A modernized Mississauga Road interchange and widened overpass;
  • New multi-use recreational trails, including a bridge connecting trails on opposite sides of the Credit River;
  • Stormwater ponds and an upgraded stormwater drainage system; and
  • The rehabilitated historic Credit River Bridge.
During construction in 2024, Indigenous artifacts were discovered in the area of the QEW lanes on the original bridge, on the eastern edge of the site. Due to the discovery, construction at this location stopped to enable archaeological investigations. The investigations will continue into 2026.

Once the investigations are complete, MTO will hire a construction firm to complete the remaining works, including;
  • the North-South pedestrian bridge;
  • underground water infrastructure;
  • re-installation of noise walls; and,
  • open the QEW lanes on the historic bridge plus the eastbound on-ramp to the QEW.
An update will be posted later in 2026.

I.e. indefinitely.

I guess the previous firm(s) had their contract prematurely ended... Not looking good for the cost of this project.
