Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

Fair - I don't know the area that well. Tolling only certain vehicles exiting a tolled bridge would likely be seen as punitive. Further made moot because I doubt the province would allow it anyway.

    General railway discussions

These are the posts that started it. My point was, if the proposal is for HSR, they will likely face the same feedback as Alto is, regardless of where they put stations. The advantage Red Deer has is at least it forms a straight line line between the two anchor cities.

You might be right, but I suspect the issue would not be a different rate but, rather, a toll vs no toll. Hwy 407 is privately owned. Huronchurch Rd. is public property. I think the whole issue is moot anyway. Even if the city wanted to and could, how do you toll a road full of cross streets...

President Donald Trump's United States of America

I saw that, but not what went on before. I hate to be the contrarian but 'First Amendment Rights", just like our Charter Sec 2 rights, are not absolute. You can't highjack a council meeting, Senate meeting or school board meeting with impunity, just like you can't yell 'fire' in a crowed room...

If it becomes a topic in Alberta, likely similar to what we are seeing in eastern Ontario. Wide ROWs cutting farms in half, restricting access to communities, noise, wildlife, not benefit to people who will face the disruption, etc.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

You'd be surprised how many are 'centennial' arenas, and past their best before date.

On that we agree, and I suspect those against urban projects have the similar motivation.

I obviously don't know what's in the heart of Ms Smith, but I suspect she is playing from the 'Quebec gets stuff by whining and threatening to leave' playbook.

Fair and good point. I wonder if there is a legal foundation (in our context, a constitutional foundation) for imposing a toll on one class of vehicle, particularly if could established that it is considered punative.

President Donald Trump's United States of America

He (and the US in general) has very little understanding of the religious and cultural tribalism in the Middle East.

They probably will, given that federal governments providing funding to all sorts of provincial and municipal undertakings but, constitutionally, Alto does cross a provincial boundary. I wonder if Alberta will encounter the 'ruining rural lifestyle' arguments.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

I suspect many in the 'northern study area corridor' wouldn't be swayed by improvements to legacy VIA. Many urban people over estimate the number of rural people who actually travel to a large urban area beyond their local 'service centre' community. Hope you didn't pull anything making that...

    News from the Middle East

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a significant de-escalation after Trump and his circle have made their fill from the stock market disruption. The Kurds have to remember the number of times they have been left twisting in the wind by the West.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Even Ontario, which is a whole lot closer to service, is keeping any pricing information close to its vest. I suspect none of the Alto senior staff will be around for the inaugural run.
