    General railway discussions

Yes, much better. I'm a fan of Dixie Lee but there are something like three left in Ontario. With onboard wifi now, I suppose nothing would stop a passenger from ordering something and having it delivered to the next station stop.

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

It largely depends on your parameters. Providing a service that bleeds taxpayer dollars might be "better" for the ones who use it but perhaps not for the ones paying for it. The current Canada Post tribulations are an example. Is daily service to every household in Canada, in some cases...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

The railways not wanting to continue with a money losing service should surprise no one. I guess the government could have subsidized them to carry on but decided on VIA instead. They likely saw Amtrak in the US and decided that was the way to go, only they didn't bother supporting it with...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

I guess it depends on where along the 'socialism < - > free market capitalism' spectrum one lands. A free market economy properly regulated in the public interest is the ideal but it's a tough balance. I'm not sure where I stand on the State owning capital interest, outside of an arms-length...

Perhaps. I haven't been in one of their 'beaks and feet' stores in years. I understand the Japanese vending machine dining is something to behold (there's apparently a word for it).

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

We've all had buyer's remorse over some purchase that seemed like a good idea at the time but, jeez, this is a spectacular 180* turn-around. Does he have bad advisors or just ignores the ones that he does have? They were not OPP aircraft. Previously, they were operated by the MNR in its role...

President Donald Trump's United States of America

If it is true that provisions on some ships are low, my speculation would be that the Administration (Trump/Hegseth) felt that this would be such a quick and easy win that they didn't allow for the necessary work-up (and possibly over-riding objections from military planners). Many people don't...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

Both CN and CPKC are much different corporations than they were back in CN's Crown Corp days. They are both now multi-national corporations. I suspect any attempt by the government to nationalize or even take a controlling interest in one or both of them would be met with calls from the US for...

Alto - High Speed Rail (Toronto-Quebec City)

In the 1970s, freight trains were probably more frequent, but much shorter. Probably easier to interweave.

If China thinks KFC is good dining we have little to worry about.

    Kotsy's Toronto Photos

Cool shots. I saw this on FB, apparently taken from an aircraft.

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Expecting serious musings out of Ford is like expecting the same out of Trump. If he really cared about the justice system he would put money into the bits his government is currently responsible for. That's right up there with him and Smith wanting the provinces to select superior court...

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Fair enough. A strange stance for a G7 country, but fair enough. I think even North Korea has its edifices but could be wrong.

    Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

Any owner/investor would want to see a potential profitable business before starting a business or changing hours, especially in the winter. To open for a handful of passengers who may or may not be customers when there is no other business opportunity doesn't sound very attractive from a...

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

As I said, bad timing and I'm not defending it. It would be naive to believe that everything a senior executive does is done via Zoom. Curious, should 24 Sussex be bulldozed and sold? Should the current multi-billion renovation of Parliament Hill be scrapped. Maybe they could sell the land...

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

I think that's what I said. Where is this coming from?

President Donald Trump's United States of America

    That's the 'pillaging' part.

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Sure, like it is registered in his own name. It will be an asset of the Crown in the Right of Ontario. If he loses an election, he becomes citizen Ford and the asset is no longer his problem. I think the timing really sucks, and I'm not defending the purchase, but is the outrage right up...

    Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Not without some major legislative changes and even with that, there might be legal impediments. that I can't immediately think of because it's kind of a bizarre topic. Crown Attorneys are employees of the Ministry of the Attorney General and the province is responsible for the administration...

At least there are towns west of White River. The only one east that in my mind qualify as town is Chapleau. West of White River *might* have decent tourist potential simply because of the coastal scenery. As for accommodations, in a town of 560, read 'not much' and 'basic'.
