I believe its correct to say that ION uses track circuits (not tags). Although I've also seen control points referred to as "beacons". I'd assume whats more important is what type of control action is occurring at the point rather than the actual infrastructure. If hard "overspeed" directives...
There's a new article by Tritag describing the changes needed to improve ION speeds. Seems topical given speed concerns of Lines 5 and 6:

Full disclosure: I donated my diagram describing ION speed concerns...
According to this document the projected travel time from Fairway to Downtown Cambridge is 29 minutes, which given a distance of 17 km, means a projected travel speed of 34km/h - as fast as B-D (line 2) (and thrice as fast as Finch West).
the reason for not going straight from Preston to Galt...
Initial travel time estimates of Finch West were at 33-34 minutes or 38 minutes in this oddly contradictory Metrolinx doc from 2 years ago. This would have meant a speed of 10.3/(34/60) = ~18 km/h or ~16kmh respectively. This is still slower than ion (16.26/(44/60) = ~22 km/h but a lot faster...
Local Waterloo Region transportation advocacy organization Tritag - which has done an great job advocating for night buses and ion stage 2 - has published an informative article summarizing issues affecting the implementation of 2WAD GO train service to Kitchener. I think it nicely summarizes...
The gov did allocate 160M for London go in 2022? but I believe that didn't go anywhere. (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/london-go-transit-metrolinx-final-report-1.7078430)
Technically speaking the GO pilot wasn't cancelled due to low ridership but due to construction at London station...
I really like your historical bus/interurban maps! Have you made a map combining all of Toronto's interurban lines at their peak? (I know you've tackled the TSR and the TMR).
cross posting this here:

4 new Kitchener line trips/weekend+ 1 new Kitchener line trip/day (to Kitchener)
According to the document shared earlier, the projected travel time from Fairway to Downtown Cambridge is 29 minutes, which given a distance of 17 km, means a projected travel speed of 34km/h - as fast as B-D (line 2).

I started a thread of discussion about various old GO/Metrolinx plans here: https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/go-transit-corridor-studies.37239/
I have also made a Google drive of some of the old transit plans in Ontario...
The region has unveiled a new business case for Cambridge GO:

Its a pretty similar plan to the last batch but its a lot more detailed
Complimentary BlogTO "article"...
Max operational speed is 10 km slower than the max vehicle speed (ex 70kmh)
We should be able to hit that speed on the waterloo+huron spurs and the hydro corridor near Fairway mall. but the operations are so conservative we only really hit like 60kmh on those corridors
cant speak to 1)
but regarding 2) theres basically 3 reasons
a) Regarding the Traynor section, this was initially one of the faster sections but the region had to construct a temporary crossing (no boom gates) in this area after local groups felt they were cut off from the near by shopping...
Looks like we finally have an update for breslau station as well:
"Region buys land in Breslau for future GO station, affordable housing"

Waterloo Region is seeking comment for ideas for their 2025-2030 business plan. I'd like to encourage those who are interested to take the short survey/mapping their GRT/ION ideas here: https://www.engagewr.ca/grt-business-plan
In other news:
As expected it will take a while for ION stage 2...
