The article acknowledges that, too. It's an attempt to open a constructive dialogue, rather than the knee-jerk divisive commentary we're seeing everywhere.

It's not necessary to attempt to dissect and divide the voting blocs. It's plainly visible in the geographic and demographic statistics, and nobody's being criticized for that. A large, distinct group of voters are unsatisfied with the mayor, and that's entirely the mayor's fault.

Then again, the above "EIFS quoins" image might send a message about Rob Ford's support base. Like, in old Don Mills, you can see plenty of houses like this reclad with such a treatment--at least, those which escaped the teardown merchants.

Look at it this way. If you want the thrust of Rob Ford's pitch, think in terms of a before/after photo contrast: a 50s Don Mills bungalow a la James Murray, before and after the EIFS-quoin treatment. The Ford pitch might be to frame the "old and tired" former against the "fresh" latter. The anti-Ford pitch would rather invoke Don Mills history in order to condemn the latter's tawdry philistinism.

Ford won because the former message is perceived as simple and easy to understand, compared to the high-minded elitism of the latter. Whether that makes the former message "right"--let alone reflective of neighbourhood/civic values that are worth encouraging or kowtowing to--is another matter entirely. (As for the latter message, I suppose it's a metaphor for the "petty attacks" of which archanfel speaks.)

As I have been saying, people are fed up with elitists' "visions" and these so called "visions" being forced onto them. It was not about average income, or family size or city 123. It was a finger to those who like to use our tax money to pay for their own ideology. Now, Would Ford be any different? I don't know. The problem with right wing politicians is that they tend to use our tax dollars to pay for a separate set of ideologies. Like more cops, bigger military, etc. I guess we will have to wait and see.

You also thought Ford had no chance of winning and he was against immigrants. Yet immigrants voted Ford in.

I didn't say Ford was a commoner, just like Smitherman wasn't exactly an architect (neither is adma I suspect). Ford was supported by the commoners whereas Smitherman was supported by elitists (and some people who depend on socialist spending).

I was wrong, I never expected any self-respecting human being would vote for a drunken bigot. I do have a failing of over-estimating people.

It's pretty clear that Ford is anti-immigrant. Perhaps those that have immigrated are aware of how much they are getting from society, and don't want others to come. Perhaps they are just ignorant.

Don't dis Don Mills. There are plenty of beautiful homes in that area, especially east of the DVP in Parkwoods (my hood). Though the photo you posted is quite ugly.

The beauty of democracy is that it would not allow a group self-righteous elitists to hijack the will of the people for long. Or perhaps you were wrong again. I told you from the beginning not to confuse immigrants with refugees, you wouldn't listen. Now you seem to confuse immigrants with social leeches. The vast majority of immigrants are hard working people and they were generally successful in their home countries. It pains them to accept any social assistance whereas it's the locals who have no problem living on welfare for long period of time. What Ford asked, which the elitists found outrageous, was exactly what the immigrants were asking.

"Do you have a job, sir? I'll give you a newspaper to find a job, like everyone else has to do between 9 and 5."

My advice to you is still to go talk with some immigrants instead of forming an opinion for them.

Stop calling Ford a bigot. That statement holds no value since white liberals seemed to have much more issue with his words than immigrants themselves. They latter seemed to support him quite largely. Why would someone be offended by being called "hard working?"
