VIA Rail

Train 26 is confirmed a 5 car double ended HEP2 set. It has one unrefurbished car with the old red seats! I haven’t seen these since pre-Covid and thought they all gone ! Much more comfortable than the newer seats of the refurbished cars and all seats have a window!

No way. The LRC seats are much better

So far, it appears VIA is sticking to this LRC car retirement schedule. Cars must be out of service by January 31 of the year after the Retirement Year listed.

Believe it or not, VIA's Venture saga still simmers in the Quebec Superior Court, perhaps to be held in December or January, 2026. Well over a year since CN imposed its crossing speed reductions the Venture fleet in the Corridor. The latest developments in the Quebec case in this just-published post:

After a few days' disruption, Set 7/25, also known as XS-J, a.k.a. DXS a.k.a.The Leftovers is back on its rotation, shown here from five levels up through Kingston a few minutes late at 1450 today operating as VIA No 47.View attachment 697088

They should split these up and just run them each as the Sarnia trains.

Majority of the route is on non-CN track (Metrolinx to GEXR) and the GEXR portion is so slow you wouldn't even notice a speed restriction anyways if there were any.

The only portion thats CN is London to Sarnia, which is a small part of the route.

They run 3 car trains on that route already as it is.

VIA's Corridor rotation, designed for as much run-through service at Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal includes some trainsets getting 2-3 'legs' per day i.e.. 31-45-87, 84-46, 53-87 and different pairings each day for the Ventures. There are few 'legs' that are served by the same trainset throughout a week, with a few exceptions like LRC runs 67-79/72-66.

VIA's rotation also includes returning to Toronto or Montreal for servicing, refuelling, cleaning, running or heavy maintenance of these trainsets. Not that I disagree at all with your idea. It's just getting VIA to remarshal trainsets to different lengths, whether to evade the CN-imposed crossing speed reductions or otherwise, is like pulling hen's teeth - and they're pretty rare!

One thing that surprised me was that I was on a M-T Via and we were running late into Toronto. They said if you were on the train to Windsor to not worry as this train turns into it. Honestly,I though a train ends in the city listed on the schedule. Having them not listed as thru trains, but being thru trains may cause cascading issues along the network.

Right but less likely to miss your connection lol
