Premier Doug Ford's Ontario

Why would conservative owned media want to hold them to account?
Indeed. PostMedia is owned by the same American company that owns the National Enquirer... I'm not saying PostMedia's papers are the same as the National Enquirer, but they definitely have a conservative bent. The Globe and Mail ownership is more conservative than the editorial board (election endorsements don't seem to align with editorials). And IIRC the Toronto Star is has a more conservative owner now. I'm ignoring television as they generally do news clips instead of stories these days, though you can see by what they've not covering that they are centre-right

They where really noisy on Wynn. But mostly quiet on Doug until it mattered that they should say something.

My electricity bill have never been higher but I guess we're over manufactured stories about electricity prices and not being able to afford it and feed a family of four.

And the Ontario government is paying for an increasing amount of your hydro bill to keep it artificially low. "But they're fiscally smart"

In which Doug gives a Trump style screed against any criticism:

Doug Ford is only hated on Twitter (and I guess reddit and the internet in general)

The general public don't really know how corrupt and sleazy he is.

They just assume that because he is a conservative he is good with finances and wouldn't waste money.

Most of his supporters blame the Federal Liberals for all the shit that is going bad.
Yep and the media just focuses on the federal Liberals so that's all people hear about. When they cover Ford it's generally positive and not negative.

I think we're missing a concise and resonating message from the opposition, and as much as I'm content with Marit Stiles, I question her ability to be relatable and charismatic in the way we see Ford succeed. I think the PC's will feel safe until there's a new face of the NDP or Liberal Party, and their messaging gets really good and hammered constantly. I know it's the opposition's job to oppose, but think what the party (or Stiles' office) puts effort into getting out to the people needs to be restricted to just a handful of topics, more than they already are. As much as I love nuance, everyday people just don't care or have time for it.

Also I imagine being part of the NDP and the stigma from Rae Days still dogs the party 30 years hinders potential. I do notice Stiles' messaging has sharpened since the shake up of her staff, and I wonder how much we'll see strategy that worked for NYC's Mamdami get applied here with future leaders on the left. But if it were easy to put together a strategy and gain support, Ford would already be out of office.

I'll offer some pushback about how popular Ford remains. There was polling data released by Leger at the start of the month that shows more people's opinions of Ford worsened more than improved in the last six months (14% improved, 32% worsened), and a large number of people think Ontario is on the wrong track, but clearly that doesn't translate to voting intention, which when this was published, PC's lead with 44%.

45% turnout. Boomers and immigrants voted him in.
To be clear though, immigrants can't vote in a provincial election unless they have become Canadian Citizens first. If you are including that in the definition of immigrant here, then as an immigrant, I did not vote for them. Nor would I if I was paid to or had a gun put to my head...

That said and being so, the latter then always seems to vote them in when they're the party that will most likely try to kick them out. /sigh
