To get myself through the Trump years I'm going to push our imaginations forward to 2028. For starters, let's not consider that Trump might run again, as I think that's a non-starter. What about JD Vance, will Trump anoint him as his chosen successor?

As for the Democrats, I think Newsome is looking good. The Nov 2026 Midterms will give us a good indication of who's up and coming. Though, given their fondness for self-immolation I would not be shocked if the 2028 ticket is Harris-Clinton 😧 .

Trump has in the Oval Office and sells online hats with TRUMP 2028 on them. Their online store uses the words "rewrite the rules" in its blurb.

Pushing this aside as a non-starter simply ignores the very real possibility of the attempt to do exactly that. MAGA believe they have a loophole for the 22nd Amendment.
 
Newsom will have the same hurdles the last few center right candidates have had. Anti-Trump isn't enough to win an election.

Progressives don't want to vote for someone who's openly anti-trans, who does photo ops of himself destroying homeless encampments, who platforms Charlie Kirk on their podcast, and who is another Israel apologist.

They will, once again, not vote or vote for a third party, thinking 4 years isn't so long and how much worse could it get.

Fair points, if he lives that long. Trump would be 86 by the end of this potential third term in Jan 2033, which would be a testament to the preservatives in KFC and McDs.

I am looking forward to the exit of the Boomers on both the GOP and DEMs. We can even skip my Gen-X if need be and go straight to Millennials.
 
Governors and Senators are the most common candidates for President. Though Trump is among those who vary from that mold. Vice Presidents are also not an uncommon offering.

In respect of the above.

Governor Newsom (California) is a frequent mention; as is Governor Pritzker of Illinois, and Gov. Whitmer of Michigan.

Governor of Maryland Wes Moor is definitely thought of as a potential nominee and Gov. Shapiro of Pennsylvania as well.

I'm not really hearing of any serious candidates from the Senate but Alexandria Ocassio Cortez is certainly being mooted as possible. I think she's more likely to take a run at Schumer's Senate seat, but we shall see.

From the Senate, Cory Booker is a maybe so is Amy Klobuchar

Pete Buttigieg keeps coming up (former Obama Transportation Secretary )

Rahm Emanuel former Mayor of Chicago and Clinton era chief of staff ) is also out self-promoting.

On the GOP side we should expect a competitive convention rather than the party appointing whomever Trump wants, especially if the Republicans do badly in Nov 2026. Republican candidates would include Vance, Rubio, DeSanti, Tim Scott, and Ted Cruz.

I wonder if there was the same level of inter-generational angst before sociologists applied cutsie names to them. I figure it was just between 'old farts ' and 'younger whippersnappers'

Well, before the Greatest Generation (born 1901-1927), the average lifespan was about 60, while there was really no adolescence, with people instead starting work at twelve or thereabouts. Life was harsh, with a much small middle class. I expect people identified by their class and ethnicity rather than their generation.

With his sit down at Davos and new book, Newsom is definitely positioning himself for a run.
I like Buttigieg, but is the majority of America and most swing states willing and ready to vote for a gay president? Maybe in my lifetime, but in 2028, IDK.
I've read that Klobuchar is aiming to replace Walz as Minnesota Governor.
Just no more Boomers please Democrats!

Beyond Vance and Rubio, who do we see running for the GOP? If the country's right leaning voters have soured by 2028, maybe Nikki Haley makes another appearance?

The top three would be a disaster. Shapiro comes off as smug and intimates Obama-light vibes. Kelly’s my pick, this early on anyways.
