It may not be apparent in the photos but there’s actually a lot of time and effort being invested for art installations at each station.
Starting in 2023 the REM commissioned local artist teams to create a unique installation at each of the REM stations. They were supposed to be temporary installations but later were made permanent due to popularity with the public.
I have a close friend who - together with her art class at UQAM - created the art installation hanging from the ceiling of the Gare Centrale REM station. I agree that stations can be bare bones, but there’s ongoing efforts to work with local artists, architects, and non profit organizations to beautify each station in the network, while not having to break the bank (my friend’s project was funded in part by UQAM, CDPQi, and some private donors).
It just may not be apparent from day one because they decided to install these artworks after the opening of each station.
