TTC: Major Operational Issues (Various)

Go figure, the TTC still hasnt figured out to run trains properly during the winter months. No service from Woodbine to Kennedy so far this morning.

Sort of.

They are running service into Warden.

I'm currently at Warden and there have been 3 trains heading east to Kennedy in the past 20 minutes.

Nothing heading towards Kipling at this point.

It isn't our first winter storm (in fact, we had it worse in previous years) and I don't recall multi-day, multi-incident delays like we are having now.

I wonder if they implemented a new protocol after the 2022 storm.

If you recall in January 2022, buses and trains were stranded due to the weather.

Streetcars couldn't get out and they had all hands on deck to get the yards cleared.

I am talking about examples from even earlier - in the 2000s. We have had even crazier storms than this and while there was impact to service, it was never bad enough to bring the yard to its' knees. What changed?

It has been a perceptual function of government the last few decades to get reports done on things that go wrong, from Royal Commissions to Inquests......and.....not every time mind you, but all too often, we find out 5, 10, 20 years later
that key recommendations were ignored.

Not to drag us too off topic here, but w/the crash at Pearson top of mind......... I note that after the Air France incident 2 decades ago, one of the recommendations was to install ground-level radar for low wind shear.

Guess what Pearson still hasn't installed, 20 years on....

Now in fairness, they did change the length of the problem runway and implement some other recommendations.

But it astounds how we know the solutions to problems, its just they will cost money, or take time, or inconvenience someone etc...

I would be interested to hear @smallspy 's take on measures that may mitigate some of the issues we've seen crop up on TTC the last few days.

Icy rails, switch issues, snow accumulation, blowing snow.

We're not going to put all of Wilson Yard under a roof anytime soon; but are we utilizing heated switches on outside tracks? Do we have trains with plows on the front to remove excess snow from outdoor rails?

Do we (TTC) require or make use of third rail heaters?

Are there are any sensible ways short of roofing/walls to reduce blowing snow as an issue in yards?

Have we? I haven't found any point since 1999 where we've had this much reported snow depth at the Toronto weather station - though I haven't checked completely. The 2022 event was big, but was only a single storm event, which was less than the combination of these two storms.

I do think it's the deepest depth since the new signalling system went in - though that wouldn't explain the current problems on Line 2 - though those aren't unusual at the east end of the line at the best of times. Anyhow, there's no issues currently being reported.

shame on the Ontario MPPs for not discussing the sorry state of the TTC during this election campaign
What should they say? They’ll upload it to metrolinx?
