Why must terrazzo be used? Why not use the existing tile pattern for the floor?

I think it's because it's an easier surface to install and also since it's all the same thickness it won't hinder someone in a wheelchair the way that tiles can. It's pretty much the TTC's go to floor now unless it's bare concrete.

Lansdowne Station
Easier Access Project

The TTC’s Easier Access Program is making subway stations accessible for everyone. The TTC will be working on Lansdowne Station accessibility. Construction is expected to begin in late 2018/early 2019. A public open house with more project information and construction details will be scheduled for fall 2017/winter 2018.

This work will include the following station improvements:

• Three elevators to access eastbound and westbound platforms
• Two accessible fare gates
• Barrier free path to all levels of the station from the main entrance
• An automatic sliding door to enter station
• Improved signage
• Security cameras along the accessible pathway

Back on June 29th 2010, the TTC had the kick-off public meetings for the elevators and second exits for Woodbine, Donlands, and Greewood stations. One meeting for Woodbine, and simultaneously a second meeting down the road for Greenwood/Donlands.

Construction at Woodbine is all but done (I posted some photos the other day in that threat at http://urbantoronto.ca/forum/goto/post?id=1257656), and should open before the end of September (so TTC told me on Monday).

So how's the progress at Greenwood? I think they'd only narrowed down the location of the exit to about 6 places back in 2010.

Looks like they've now narrowed it down to 10 locations. Including one or two that are actually on Danorth - that would be a first. Note that (like the station), none are near Greenwood Avenue. Some are only 300 metres from Coxwell Avenue (but 450 metres from Greenwood Avenue).

I'm fearful to read the rest of the of the update ... they probably have it up to 16 choices by the end. The project website is at http://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Projects/Second_Exit_Projects/Greenwood_Station/index.jsp Construction is planned to be complete in 2023; well that's only 13 years ... they've been actively working on the new exit from Dundas West for 44 years now.

The Donlands site is at http://www.ttc.ca/About_the_TTC/Projects/Second_Exit_Projects/Donlands_Station/index.jsp where things are advancing a little faster. There's a preliminary design, and the new entrance and elevators may open in 2022 - only taking 12 years. The location is quite interesting, in terms of providing more entrances along Danforth.

Chester station has been moving ahead too. But seems to have stalled - no news for over a year. But they only started work on this in Spring 2014. Implausibly the current schedule calls for construction to start this year, and open in 2020. Last year, they'd actually got the location narrowed down to one option!

Rather a dull, uninspired, and unfortunate choice, given the existing platform pretty much stretches from Jackman Avenue to Arundel Avenue. Judging from the crap graphics (which look like there were whipped up in 3 minutes with Powerpoint) compared to the other sites, the local community is just letting the TTC roll over them. Here are the 15 options that were considered back in 2014.

There's still time though, perhaps it will be up to 8 options by the next meeting.

@nfitz - hard to be too concerned about Chester. It's the lowest use station on the network. I almost flipped when I saw the colour art mockup for above the main entrance.

On a more positive note, my closest walk-to station entrance would be Donlands at Dewhurst rather than Greenwood. That's about 5 minutes less than now. Yay!

Also - looking at the old presentation materials - "second exit" / "automatic entrance" It's great that PRESTO has put paid to that nonsense. All automatic. All the time. Come and go as you please. How modern.

And back to the point of the post. Interesting the amount of tunnel building they are willing to do at Donlands not to have the entrance in a 'red' zone. But at Chester it's plunk - right in the middle of the 'red' undesirable zone. At Greenwood, you'd have to think that D, E, F, and G are most likely, I - mid-block on Strathmore is ridiculous unless you really only do want a second emergency exit, and that to your (great) point any of A, B, or C on or near the Danforth would rock and bring new riders. Not to mention that the subway in this stretch of the Danforth is pretty much invisible.

If the TTC (and Toronto Council) could get over themselves and put buildings on top of stations, they could expropriate 1366 Danforth, and then pay for it re-selling the land and the developer could put a proper 'avenue' height building 4 to 6 stories tall on the Danforth.

The TTC could have created an underground walkway to Greenwood Avenue from Linsmore Crescent, such that Greenwood station actually has an entrance/exit to the street it is named after.
