Earlier today, Premier Kathleen Wynne appeared in Bowmanville to announce the expansion of GO Tranit's Lakeshore East corridor from the line's current terminus in Oshawa, 20 kilometres to the east to a new terminal in Bowmanville, improving access to GO Transit in Durham Region by 2023 or 2024.

The extension would serve by rail an area currently connected to GO Transit's network by bus service through the terminus in Oshawa. Rail service intervals would average 30 minutes during off-peak hours. A total of four new stations on the Lakeshore East line would be constructed at Thornton Road in Oshawa, Ritson Road in Oshawa, Courtice Road in Courtice, and Martin Road in Bowmanville.

"Expanding GO train service in Durham Region is a natural next step, building upon planning work and service and infrastructure improvements that are already underway through our Regional Transportation Plan" said Metrolinx President and CEO Bruce McCuaig. "We look forward to working with our partners to get more people moving."

The extension is currently undergoing infrastructure and service planning, being undertaken by Metrolinx. Since a stretch of the extension plans to use CP Rail's existing corridor north of Highway 401, Metrolinx is working alongside CP Rail on the extension's planning.

Today's announcement is the latest in a recent string of transit and infrastructure fundings announced by the provincial government, related to the $16 billion earmarked for improving rapid transit and infrastructure in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
