Following on the early success of the mixed-income renewal now underway in the Regent Park community, Toronto's Alexandra Park community is now being rebuilt too. A partnership between Toronto Community Housing, the City of Toronto, and private-sector developer Tridel, the process here includes a total of 1,540 market-price condominium units and 333 new rent-geared-to-income units, along with new neighbourhood amenities and the refurbishment of 473 existing units.

The first market condominium being built in the community, SQ Condos, just marked a milestone steps from the Spadina-Queen intersection from which it draws its moniker. Since our last update in September, concrete has risen above grade, and has now progressed up to the second floor of the 14-storey building.

Featuring an avant-garde, cubist design by Teeple Architects, SQ will add a unique architectural focal point to the community. Residents of the completed SQ will have a long list of UNION31-appointed amenity spaces at their disposal, including an outdoor terrace with barbecues, a sun deck, and a hot tub, as well as a yoga/pilates studio, and a private dining room.

As work on the lower floors of SQ kicks into gear on Cameron Street, the LGA Architectural Partners-designed Atkinson Co-Op replacement townhouse units a block to the west on Vanauley Street are looking much closer to completion.

The townhouses' dark brick cladding is now contrasted by bright projections that add considerable visual interest to the exterior elevations.

More market condominum units will soon add even more diversity to the neighbourhood, as sales are well under way for SQ2 at Alexandra Park, set to rise one block to the north of the first phase SQ. As with the first phase, SQ2 will rise 14 storeys and feature a design by Teeple Architects.
