As cranes and gleaming towers increasingly come to dominate Toronto's landscape, new residential density is changing the face of the city, with increasingly urban lifestyles replacing the car-oriented culture that characterized much of the 20th century. While most of the city's new urban density is coming in the form of high-rise towers, a select number of smaller projects are introducing urban paradigms on a more intimate scale. ConneXion, a four-storey development by North Star Homes, is one such project.

Designed by TACT Architecture, the development will bring 150 new residential suites to the Bloor and Islington area. Located on Fieldway Road, the site—currently occupied by the sales office—is a short walk away from Islington station, with the upcoming regional transit hub at Kipling also easily accessible. While the project is bringing density to the area, Connexion's townhouse-inspired design provides a sense of privacy not always found in high-rise condominium towers.

The brick exterior, together with the small green spaces that surround each entrance (above), create a modern urban aesthetic, yet one that hints at the older, detached homes that have characterized Etobicoke throughout most of its history. Connexion's intimate scale and discretely modern design fosters an urban lifestyle without the overwhelming density and impersonal ambiance that sometimes accompany it.

Currently, the sales centre and model suite stand on the site of the development, giving potential buyers a glimpse into the style of the suites. Suite will feature 9' ceilings and high-end finishes—including oak handrails and spindels, while each unit also features sound insulation and a "TJ Silent Flooring" installation.

The bathrooms and kitchen are designed in a clean, white colour scheme, with a selection of cabinetry and tiles available to buyers. A more comprehensive look at the model suite is available in our earlier story, and on the project website.

As land values increase in the area, a wave of new development is re-shaping Etobicoke with new density and increasingly urban lifestyles. ConneXion provides a sort of hybrid between the urbanizing and increasingly metropolitan Etobicoke rising skyward, and the older, more neighbourly communities that have characterized the area to date.

ConneXion's onsite presentation centre is now open, located at 26 Fieldway Road. Additional information and renderings can be found in our dataBase file for the project, linked below.
