TTC: Where's the Streetcar?

I don't think your comment is fair ... during a "test" as you call it is it wrong to point out what is lacking ... that's all they're doing above.

If the final plan is to implement it then great.

Anyway I think it's been established that once everything is said and done it should indicate, 1) If it's short turning 2) the particular branch # if necessary (on some routes it's really not) 1) would suffice.

Indeed it is. It certainly isn't essential to operation. The entire thing is a test - clearly by the time it is fully implemented, that will be included. Presumably the data isn't available yet. Not sure what you all expect in a test.

Yeah, god forbid the TTC aim for anything beyond the minimum operational necessity...it's not always evident, but transit systems exist to move people, not to move transit vehicles.

Given that they are able to identify the route that the streetcar is on (ie not confusing 509s on Queen's Quay with 510s), there should be something that can identify what branch the car is on. Shouldn't be a big deal. The only issues are that 1) a supervisor at Spadina Station may re-assign an incoming car to run as a Union rather than a King terminus; 2) unlike bus routes, streetcar routes don't have suffixes for branches or short turns as to not recognize where the final destination is, and not recognized by the software. Then there are the in-service runs to the carhouses.

It is something that should be addressed. It can be very fustrating to wait for many cars to go by that turn at Adelaide to end at Charlotte and King if one is going further south.

The TTC needs to affix letter suffixes to the streetcar route numbers. To have Union Station, Adelaide & Charlotte (King), and Queens Quay identified as 510 destinations without a letter suffix can be confusing.
Union Station, being the furthermost destination, should remain as 510, but Adelaide & Charlotte could be 510A and Queens Quay could be 510B.
Any streetcar returning to the carbarns should have a unique 000 route number so anyone can stay on it until it reaches it. Any streetcar going from the carbarns could still display their route number. That way the screens could at least become more meaningful for the passengers.

These ticker signs are going to be nice, finally a way to know if I should walk to union or wait for a streetcar.

Why rename - according to the TTC website, the 510 King cars are 510K and the 510 Queen's Quay cars are 510Q?

Except Adam Giambrone, on CBC Radio today, said very clearly that it wasn't a test and was the first phase of the full roll out.
Yes, but that doesn't mean that everything is fully polished. Look at the TTC's own web site, complete with a placeholder for where the trip planner will go.

BTW, does anyone else think it's unnecessary for it to tell people that the 510 Spadina heads south via *Spadina*?

The press release clearly says "TTC Chair Adam Giambrone launched the pilot project at the Spadina Station streetcar platform.".

More interesting is that the new GPS hardware will be installed on all the streetcars by end of 2008; so this is pretty much done. Hopefully we'll start to see other streetcar routes soon - it would be wonderful if those real-time maps started to be available on the Internet asap; it would certainly give a good indication if there is good service running before heading to the stop.

Just as clearly as the words that came out of his mouth, if you ask me.
