Toronto Pan Am Village in the West Don Lands | ?m | ?s | DundeeKilmer | KPMB

The centre of the square was left open so that it can be easily set up with temporary market stalls.

That's good and should be noted as an achievement of the space. Toronto has very few public squares. Our farmers' markets tend to happen in parking lots around the city, and community events usually use streets closed to cars. We need public squares in different parks of the city to facilitate and provide space for more of these functions.

Remember, some of the best and/or most intimate public squares in Europe are framed by buildings, to provide enclosure.

Well, that's good to hear. At least it will have something to animate that square. I guess there is method in their madness but a little bit of style, would have been appreciated.

As the silva cells surrounding the tree pits have already been installed on Cherry Street, Front Street, Mill Street and Old Eastern Avenue (and the sidewalks surrounding them are in the process of being laid) it would be good if WT (or Infrastructure Ontario?) planted the trees in them this spring so that they can be somewhat more established by the time the Games starts in 2 years.

Agreed! Trees take a few seasons to take significant root outside of their rootball, so if they plant them soon-ish then they should look amazing two years from now...like the Sugar Beach trees planted years ago

Today: (this could probably go in several different threads but mehh)

sMT: Isn`t it an awesome view from Bridgepoint Hospital? I was surprised how nice the lake and islands looked from Gerrard Street East haha. Great pic btw :D

Looking at the lead story on this site's opening page about the Pan Am area being %50 completed, I can't help but notice how great the interior of the wheelhouse building looks.

Now, it would make a great place for a Museum of Toronto!

Or an Eataly!

At the edge of the gravel square, and the wheelhouse building, a perkily shaped building is rising...

Meanwhile, directly across the square westward-ish, it's still a tad barren.

But, no matter. Good things come to those who expire waiting. In the meantime, an exciting part - still a part, but almost a large one - of the Lower Don neighbourhood is rising. It would be a fever of activity, if a fever could be said to take so long.

The facade of the building with the lively floorplates also has some nice subtle touches: like this curve, following the new Eastern Ave / Lower River Street Extension on the west edge of Don River (?) Park.

This shows it a bit better:
