The Beer Store: Political Reasons to Keep/Kill It

This thread belongs in the LCBO/Beer Store thread in Retail.

Here are my thoughts.

I am a teetotaller. I say that the LCBO and the Beer Store should merge and be government-owned. See? I am in favour of killing the Beer Store, but for very different reasons.

Oh, and let's kill the adult video stores and have adult videos be sold in the LCBO. It's more convenient.

Let's kill the brothels and have prostitutes hang out in the LCBO. It's more convenient.

Let's kill the casinos and have gamblers flock to the LCBO. It's more convenient.

Oh, and let's kill alcohol advertising. See the image below.

Those are my serious thoughts.

Oh, and the Beer Store is a drug cartel that sells drugs more harmful than those "infamous" Mexican drug cartels have control over:

The Beer Store and the LCBO are legalized cartels with legalized price fixing.

Have the same cartel or price fixing accusations occurring elsewhere, see the uproar. Gasoline prices are close to those accusations, but The Beer Store and LCBO get away with it.

I like my English beers, and the beer store carries zero of them. So, all my beer comes from the LCBO.

I once went to the Beer Store to get some Speckled Hen, they advertised a 4 pack (and a six pack), but neither was actually available, I ended up purchasing a case just to get some, so I ended up with 24 500 ml bottles, my girlfriend at the time was a little put off, so I had to ration them out.

Really though in this day and age, why should the supply of alcohol be govt controlled?

I think it has less to do with any puritanical desire to control how much alcohol is consumed and more to do with an addiction to the money it generates for the government. It also appears from the discussion up-thread that the owners behind the beer store contribute significant funds to the three main political parties in this province.

I agree, let's kill the Beer Store. Beer should not be allowed anywhere in Ontario.

I must agree.

If it really bothers you that much, you could always move to a country where alcohol is banned. And party like it's 1899.

List of countries with alcohol prohibition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_alcohol_prohibition

Afghanistan -
Bahrain - Available in hotels and through private residential licenses
Bangladesh - Alcohol is completely banned and prohibition laws are very strictly enforced. Foreigners traveling can carry a few litres for personal use.
Brunei -
India - (only in the following states of Gujarat, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland,[2] and the union territory of Lakshadweep.)
Iran - Available for purchase for religious minorities
Iraq - available in some areas
Kuwait -
Libya -
Mauritania -
Pakistan - Strictly enforced, although the ban applies only to Muslims and available for purchase for religious minorities through licenses.
Saudi Arabia - Completely banned and strictly enforced.
Sudan -
Yemen - available in some hotels

It is a bit disturbing to me that the response to folks who want beer banned outright (not an opinion I share btw) is "move to somewhere where it is banned".....surely the same response could be made to those who want the method of beer distribution to be changed...."you wanna buy beer in a corner store...move to Quebec"......neither response (IMO) respects the right of people to express their own opinions on this, or any other, matter.

I wonder if The Beer Store would survive an anti trust suit in court? Granted, TBS probably has an army of lawyers at its disposal but I think there is a strong case to be made against their government mandated cartel.
Interesting list of countries that ban alcohol gabe. Combined, the countries listed have won fewer Nobel prizes than The University of Chicago. I don't know if that proves anything, but maybe it's an indication of something significant ... Or not.

Not only was alcohol legal in Canada in 1899, so was opium, marijuana, and even heroin. Recall that Heroin was then a trademark of Bayer, and they marketed it in 1899 Bayer alongside Aspirin:

Yes, I am 100% in favour of legalizing marijuana, the same way it was legal in 1899.

Party like it's 1899? I have no problem with that at all.

Edit: I just want to clarify I have no personal objection to drinking alcohol. I can handle it just fine. But it seems too many other people cannot. So if alcohol beverages were banned, of course it would be bad for me personally. But sometimes I have to consider what's best for society as a whole instead of what's best for me.
