Rob Ford's Toronto

I sent an email to the entire executive committee and threatened to spread the word over failure to act on social media networks (of which I have a respectable following) in case the fail to act immediately to have the mayor step down. It felt good, hopefully something can come of this pressure.

Nice, I meant to mention social media to Perks. I've got around seven thousand followers on Google+ who are quite used to my rants about Ford. I've got some friends who are Texans, and libertarians, these guys think Ford is a joke. I think I have a thread floating around where a Ford national calls one of these guys a socialist, the response was hilarious. Something to the tune of "I carry a gun, I vote for Ron Paul, you come to Texas and tell me I'm a communist"..

Ford's non apology may have bought him some time but it will be a short reprieve.

The wiretaps are going to reveal Lisi's conversations with Basso and Siad demanding the video. It's going to clearly show why the Mayor was quiet for a week and then finally felt safe to come out and lie to Toronto that there was no video. Second, the wiretaps will also show Ford criptically asking Lisi for drugs and to meet him at the gas station. It may not be enough to charge him but the court of public opinion will hear Ford soliciting drugs loud and clear.

Finally, Rob didn't stop drinking nor has he even tried. He was slurring his words in phone calls to people last night. He can't hold this charade for too long. Like a family member who has caught him on his alcoholism, Toronto knows when he's lying.

I hope you're right but we're they tapping the phones that early? I thought that wasn't until later...

"Torontonians are his greatest enablers, either by remaining silent as a majority or being vocal as a minority of supporters. And who can argue with the public?" : from The Star this morning. A little more outrage please.

As someone on Twittersphere has commented - this is a mayor who'd rather embarrass himself and fail at this stated task of reducing weight (and by extension, lifestyle practices that lead to his current weight); his ability of quitting any serious addiction is really quite questionable. That, coupled with stonewalling suggest it's business as usual.

The whole meltdown or otherwise tragic ending to this whole mess is becoming more and more likely.

So just a few hours after Rob pleads "heartfelt" forgiveness for his past public drunk episodes, people witness him back at the LCBO buying booze last night.

Yup, and you see a lot of that lassitude daily in how people act and behave in public in general.

AoD,

I think you're right. There will be a tragic ending to this. I don't see how Ford, himself, can carry on with all of this stuff. He's a pathetic creature, really -- a master of self deception, and it won't be pretty for him when all the curtains come down. He will bring it on himself, as usual.

I'm pretty sure Ford is doubling-down on the idea that Lisi will plead guilty.

If Lisi pleads guilty and there's no trial, from when I understand, the video will get buried. If he pleads not-guilty, that's when it gets shown in court.

Ford can plead and plead and plead right now, believing it will never see the light of day, and then in the future he can say "Listen everyone, I tried to get it released, I told Bill Blair, etc etc" - and to his supporters, that's good enough. He seems to be playing to the only strategy he has left - "Keep the core supporters, don't worry about pleasing anyone else".

At least Lorne was pushing back a little bit in his interview

Yeah - I wonder about this too. Though after the evidence is no longer a "matter of the courts", can't it be released? Any lawyers on this thread?

Cut the man some slack - his regular dial-a-bottle service hasn't been returning calls for some reason.

ETA - loving the "how to talk to your kids about drinking" banner ads today.
