Makes one really wonder how difficult it is to be a politician. I swear, keeping one's mouth shut on their dumb ideas can't be that difficult.

Being a politician is pretty easy (especially in a party system). Listen, look like you really care at the right times, and pass messages to staff. Getting elected, however, is damned difficult without a gimmick.

Councillor Josh Colle wants a free Tragically Hip concert at Downsview

I don't know if others were upset with this news as well. It seems to be the ultimate insensitivity to suggest this. He is publically holding a dying man hostage, that he has to agree to this to maintain his reputation.

The correct thing to do is discuss with the band first and only go public if the Hip agree.

Not really - it would be nice to have the ducks lined up before wondering out loud, but if terminal disease required this much sensitivity in handling, one wouldn't be running farewell concerts. He is not obliged to say yes to the request in any case.

This guy has an obsession with sticking it to non-residents. During the gardiner debate, one of his key reasons for opposing the teardown was that severing the expressway would somehow prevent the possibility of charging tolls on the DVP + Gardiner to drivers from outside the city.
